I was watching the last couple of episodes of the Amazon documentary at the weekend and the minute we went out of the Champs League to the dippers there was so much negativity from the media towards "this group of players" despite everything that could go wrong over the 2 legs going wrong. I forgot just how bad it was until watching that. Onside goal given offside at Anfield and blatant pen not given followed by the wrongly disallowed goal at home on the stroke of half time that would have put us 2-0 up. Despite that, 100 points. The highest in history and achieved in stoppage time on the last day. Unbelievable.
The next year for me was even better. 98 points and having to win 14 in a row at the end to beat a team on 97 whilst winning the Domestic Treble in the process. Never been done before and the fact we're in with a chance of doing it again or surpassing it is even more unbelievable.
If this was the rags or the dippers we would never have heard the end of it.
Yer dead right mate , I have asked a few people about the domestic treble and non of them knew it hadn’t been done before , says everything ! And as for the red twats spot on we are still hearing about the fucking class of 90blah blah
Remember at the time of the treble Danny Murphy and iirc Merson, were on Sky’s Debate programme probably a few weeks before the seasons end at around the time of the FA cup semifinal discussing who the manager of the year would be and who could lay claim to have had the better season out of us and the dippers.
Murphy straight away said dippers no question especially if they won the CL, which actually they did end up winning. It was pointed out that what if City won the domestic treble. He said it wouldn’t compare to winning the CL. It was then pointed out a domestic treble had never been achieved before. Murphy looked surprised as he thought it had been done previously but still maintained his stance that a CL win was somehow superior to an achievement that had previously never been accomplished and that to do it would probably need a run of 13 or 14 wins out of the last 14 games, (in the event it was an astonishing 14 consecutive wins to win us the title).
198 points in 2 years with 5 trophies is just ridiculous. It barely gets a mention. It’s all about how the dippers won it in style, etc etc etc. Well, how did their defence of the PL go? Utter fucking dogshit. That’s how it has gone and they are really struggling to make even top 4 this time. Do we hear stories of this failure? No, we have sob stories of VVD and such like.
And when we lift the PL and hopefully another pot or two or three come May, the achievement of 3 PL titles in 4 years and 5 in the last decade with numerous other domestic pots as well, we should get a modicum of grudging respect. But I doubt we will even get that.
