Well I don't know about that. But out of curiosity I had a look, 211 teams in FIFAs rankings list, probably 150 of them are totally useless at football. So with 48 teams you would have to wonder why there is a qualification process at all.

Yeah, that's going directly on the rankings. There's no big 'shocks' there except in the Asia berths, to be honest. I think all of the rest (excluding those in the playoffs) have been in at least one World Cup since 2002, except Mali and potentially Wales. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if qualifying is restructured to wheedle out any major shocks.
