Haaland does exactly what Aguero did, as shown against Arsenal. Haaland worked his nuts off, running back, running in behind, dragging two players with him.
Pep’s been obsessed with this 3 at the back for some time now. He’s tried it every season for about 3 years, except he’s realised it doesn’t work and gone back to what does work. This season though he seems hellbent on not giving it up.
Cucurella Is a LWB, so he always had this plan it seems.
It’s not mutually exclusive, mate, and as you say, he’s been trying this for years in different guises. Also, I’m not trying absolve Pep of any fucking about, just trying to rationalise his thinking and I’m not sure anybody could do that. He always wants an edge, to adapt when other clubs start to understand us and give himself and the team the edge.
Seems strange that we’re seeing these experiments during a game as most of the time they would be worked upon on the training ground before implemented on a game day, but with so many games and so little downtime then it has to be done at some time, and I think this is what we are seeing now.
Like I say, this, for me, was always going to be a strange season for so many reasons, and when I inevitably question Pep’s judgement I always return to the fact that whatever he is doing, it’s for a reason and that reason has done well for us during his tenure.
