English Quota / Trafford

Postby Im_Spartacus » Mon Jun 09, 2025 11:44 am

I was surprised to see Carson released, given it's well known he was in the squad for quota reasons only. I wonder if we intend to find someone else to strategically replace him, and whether this someone will be activation of James Trafford's buyback clause at a reported 40m given the reported unrest of Ortega and Ederson.

To have a squad of 25 for the CL, we need 8 home grown players, 4 club trained and 4 association trained players. While we're good on the club trained front, the exits this year would be problematic to max out our CL squad. I know that traditionally we've maintained a squad of around 20-21 so the list below would mean we can name 22.

Player Homegrown Status
Phil Foden Club-trained
Rico Lewis Club-trained
Oscar Bobb Club-trained
Nico O'Reilly Club-trained
Nathan Ake Association trained

It seems that while he's not got the passing accuracy of Ederson, he's not a million miles off Ortega's stats and beats them both in shot stopping with a top season at Burnley (seems less prone to a mistake) - and at 40m for a 22 year old club trained player, it's got to be tempting to think about giving him a year as #2.

Given the signings we've made already, we would have a theoretical CL squad of 25 (assuming we sign a 3rd keeper and Cherki) but only space based on quotas for 22. So for me this raises the question of whether MGW is a target - as even with Trafford we would need another English trained player, and if that is the case, are we going to see the likes of Reis loaned out and maybe Doku, Nunes, Silva to go?

Goalkeepers
* Ederson
* Stefan Ortega
* (Optional) James Trafford (HG)

Defenders
* Rúben Dias
* Josko Gvardiol
* Manuel Akanji
* Nathan Aké (HG)
* Abdukodir Khusanov
* Vitor Reis
* Rayan Aït‑Nouri
* Rico Lewis (HG)

Midfielders
* Rodri
* Mateo Kovačić
* Bernardo Silva
* Tijjani Reijnders
* Matheus Nunes
* Oscar Bobb (HG)
* Phil Foden (HG)
* Nico González

Forwards
* Erling Haaland
* Jérémy Doku
* Savinho
* Omar Marmoush
* Nico O’Reilly (HG)

I guess much depends on Ederson/Ortega's disposition to staying. If one of them really wants to go, we'd need a decent #2, and Trafford would seem to make a lot of sense in that scenario - even if only because we should get the 40m on resale if it didn't work out.

Carson was a perfect signing really, I'd feel bad for a younger player to come in as #3 and not play, though Betinelli appears to have effectively retired 3 years ago by the looks of it - Guardiola seems to have a similar view when he was mentioning the issue of squad size and players having no chance to play.

Pep's said those two are staying, however we'll likely lose Walker, Carson, Jack this summer - that's three English players. Stones a possibility as well. We're going to HAVE to sign someone English at some point

I thought Carson was also in as he was Mr team spirit etc?

Probably had to let him go before he'd need a company mobility scooter :D

Lewis and O'Reilly are born after 1 January 2004, and would therefore still be eligible for the UEFA B list. Mubama would have to be classed as Association trained, I think, because he hasn't been with us long enough for either B list or Club-trained status.

While they are eligible for List B, they need to go in the A list this year to count as club trained for the main quota - otherwise we don't have enough club or association trained players to make up the rest of the squad.

Wouldn't be the first time we've had short squads would it? I'm not a big fan of including duds just to meet a quota. In anything. Best person for the job.

In the list I named in the first post, there were 23 players (and I missed Gundo and Cherki) which would take it to 25 - but we can actually only name 22 based on the number of club/association trained players we have.

I think the difference before is that in the past we've been able to name youngsters on the B list, which doesn't count, so the 22 players we had were top drawer. Now we have the likes of Lewis and O'Reilly forced to be named in the main squad, which causes a little bit of a problem.

I have a sneaky suspicion we might fuck Doku, Savinho off this summer if we're bringing in the fella from Forest.

We don't need to 'fill' the A List quota, though. Those are 'reserved places'; i.e. we can't put a non club-/association-trained player in them, but if we've got enough quality in the B List it doesn't matter. However, if we have players born after 1 Jan 2004 who fulfil other (club-related) criteria, it's best to put them in the B List. As I stated, Mubama doesn't fulfil such criteria. So, in the 25/26 season, if he is to play at all, he MUST be named in the A List (Association Trained quota).

We only used up 23 of our 25 List A slots in the CL knockout rounds last season, as proof that it isn't 'mandatory' to fill the slots (edit: forgot to add the link: https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleagu ... ity/squad/).

I think you misunderstood my point. Of course it's not mandatory to fill all the A List slots, but the list A club/association trained slots dictate the overall squad size - so Lewis and Bobb must go on List A, otherwise we risk having a squad of only 21

Last year wasn't a problem as we had Walker, Stones, Foden, Grealish, all full England internationals, plus Carson - we were also then able to have several fringe players like Lewis, OReilly, McAtee on the B list, thus our actual CL squad in reality was always much bigger than 23.

Now however the fringe players are going to have to take up a full place which means some International players are going to miss out.

The reason we've always had short squads, is that we've always had around 6 club/association trained players in the required slots so the squad size has had to be lower - for each club/association slot you don't fill, you lose a squad place.

It didn't matter as we had worldies in the first 21-22 and good kids on the B list on the fringes of the first team. While we might have named squads of 21-22, there were always the likes of a Lewis, McAtee, O'Reilly, or before that a Foden and others so effectively our squad has always been 25 or more even if the list A was much smaller.

Now we have too few association trained players, so the likes of Lewis, O'Reilly and Bobb (+ Betinelli) are having to take up those list A/association trained slots, even then we will still be capped to a max of 23 (as these just replace Grealish, Stones and Walker) and therefore based on the current squad as of today, 1 or 2 full internationals will end up not being in the CL squad.

I think to keep everyone happy, it signals why we're interested in the likes of Gibbs-White and maybe Trafford, and why I suspect we may cash in on one or both of Doku / Savinho or maybe even Silva. We will definitely have to sign another British player, (or keep Stones/swallow his pride on Grealish)

I think I misunderstood your point, but only if you also weren't aware of birth dates: Rico Lewis and Nico O'Reilly are still eligible for the B List, as both are born after 1 January 2004. Bobb now needs to go on the A List (but in a club-trained spot) if he's going to feature in a CL matchday squad in any capacity. As with last season (because he was born before 1 January 2003), McAtee continues to need to be in the A List (club-trained).
