I don't think the gap between Hart and Given is as wide as people think it is. Last season's stats showed they pretty much on a par. Given however is as good as he is likely to get, whilst Hart, as good as he is now, has years of development to improve.
Hart is at a crossroads of opportunity, he stands a good chance of becoming England's keeper for many years but for that to happen, he needs to playing and challenging himself. I think he has every right to seek 1st team football. In most other clubs, he would be 1st choice and he knows he only has to move to get it.
I think Sis is right, His time will come and it will probably be elsewhere.

In my opinion, we have an amazing young keeper who will get better. He is young enough and has the potential to follow in the footsteps of City's greats; Swift, Trautmann and Corrigan. years ago, Leicester City sold the best keeper (Banks) in the World at that time to Stoke City and took a chance on a young kid. Peter Shilton went on to become a great keeper and give top quality service for a long time. I think Given may be the NOW...but Hart is the long term FUTURE. Shame if it was wearing another club's logo.
Play Hart, have a bit of patience and reap the long term benefits.

I think Given's the better of the two, though neither fill me with confidence.

Hart's attitude has really wound me up. In his position he should be saying fuck all, just getting his head down and trying his hardest to get the shirt off of Given's back. Who the fuck does he think he is, coming back from Birmingham, with all respect a mid-table side into a squad with realistic champions league ambitions and expecting to be no. 1?

two choices imo.

1. Less talk, more action. work your arse off and make that position your own. try to realise that taking the shirt off a keeper of the pedigree of Seamus is a huge statement and an early career-defining moment, or

2. Fuck off.

Given for me, his overall game is just a little better than Joe can offer us. Sorry Joe but your time will come soon enough, now just shut up and knuckle down.

I think hart is quite right to express his wish for 1st team football, it shows that he is ambitious. I would rather that, than have him say he was happy to pick up his pay and warm the bench. I want him to try and take the shirt from Given's back.

At what point has Hart indicated anywhere that he won't be knuckling down? I think Hart has already proven that he does knuckle down and work hard at his game. So why do some assume he won't and feel the need to tell him to do so?

From a short term selfish perspective, I'd want Hart to stay and fight for his place (even at long odds), as would any City fan, I expect. If he leaves without sell on restrictions (doesn't matter where), he'll end up at Arsenal or some other rival within a year. Him leaving (except on loan) would weaken us and strengthen bitter opponents (aren't they all).

I can't think of any logical reason why he'd want to stay here on the bench when he's trying to realise his potential and fulfil his ambitions. Hence, I don't really have a problem with his attitude as he hasn't done anything unprofessional. He'll sit on the bench and put in 100% effort if he has to, but why should he pass up opportunities to play a lot of high level football.

He's good enough to be starting in most prem teams, so why shouldn't he. It was different for someone like Cudicini, who'd proven himself, wasn't going to get a pay rise elsewhere, had no (realistic) international ambitions, was settled where he was and wasn't going to be sold to a rival.

One thing about Hart thats untested is his mental strength. Every keeper will have a bad game or concede a howler at some point, it happens to the best of them. The great ones will deal with it and not let it affect their game, I'd worry about a 23 year old hyped up to ridiculous by the english media what would happen to his confidence if he made a Robert Green type mistake in a big match sometime.

Given's been there, done that. If he blunders in an important game you can be sure as hell it won't happen twice and that sort of self-confidence is priceless for a top team.

This. For me Harts preseason has been a shocker and Given imo Is just a better goalie and is in his prime as he's 34. Given 4 #1

Hmmm...

Sunderland have asked Manchester City if they can sign goalkeeper Joe Hart on loan.

The 23-year-old has returned to Eastlands after spending last season at Birmingham and was expected to challenge Shay Given for the number one jersey.

However, Sunderland, who are looking to find a replacement for the injured Craig Gordon, hope City will let the England international move north to the Stadium of Light

Black Cats boss Steve Bruce told the Sunderland Echo: "We've asked the question of City and we now just have to wait and see what they say.

"But the timetable is not up to us on when we get an answer, it's up to them.

"With these new 25-man squad rules, clubs don't have to name their confirmed squads until the end of August, so if they wanted to, City could delay any decisions on their squad until then."

Surely even City wouldn't be so fucking stupid as to make the same mistake again!?

Thought Given could, and should, have done better with both of Dortmund's second half goals tonight.
