Any advice is most welcome.

I suggest you to cancel immediately your reservations, mate! Actually Naples is a shame for Italy because of the garbage tragedy, you could risk to take colera or so! All other towns in Italy ignore their problem, please let this town and their citizens alone!

Failing a crew - a money belt helps (those ones you wear next to your skin, under clothing) - minimise your attractiveness to potential muggers (including keeping your foreign gob shut where possible) and don't dawdle too long anywhere. (I speak from experience, though not FOOTBALL experience)

have you booked digs?
if not it may be worth staying just south at a place called salerno.
not a bad little town. far nicer and safer than naples. we stayed a night but i cant remember the actual place we stayed.

i would honestly try to avoid drinking clubbing and even staying in naples. me and her honestly felt safer in brooklyn and that was a fucking dump.

Me and the missus stayed there a few years back and it was a nightmare place to visit and I never once felt safe there. We ended up staying in a hotel that was almost in the shadow of the stadium. The trians are scary in and out of there and the locals very intimidating. The outer grounds of the stadium are the meeting place for all the prostitutes too so I'd seriously avoid the whole gaff.

We had a great weekend in Naples and I made it out of the place without getting robbed, shot or falling over the garbage which seemed to have been cleared up. Naples is a real working class city that is gritty and edgy. Also the weather was great and Pizza's are savage also it's dirt cheap. It's no worse than some parts of Inner City Dublin or South London But if you do a bit of research before you go you will be fine.

It's not the kind of place that I would bring the otherhalf for a romantic weekend.

The only disappointment was the Women my friends got the train down from Rome and they were raving about them but I didn’t see many good looking birds!

I saw Donal McIntyre's visit to Naples over the last week or two...How bad is it?

Most of it has been mentioned on here. The programme was about the criminal aspect (mafia). One of the suburbs Casa Di Principe has an 85% unemployment rate, but everyone one drives around in BMW Audi etc. Don't go anywhere the housing area of Le Vele ( I hope I've spelt that correctly) Drugs, Gangsters, Guns the works. McIntyre and the crew were allegedly dragged out of the car, despite having "permission" from the local mafia to film.

Glad you had a good time there, without any problems. I guess it could have been much worse, lol.

As for the women, I've not been in Naples often enough to judge...but I'm proud to say that here in Rome we do have a rather large number of fit birds.

I was beginning to think you were a gonner! Glad you enjoyed it, but the clue for us more comfort-seeking souls is in your phrases 'not the place to bring the other half for a romantic weekend' and 'gritty and edgy', and the fact that all decent birds stay hidden away!

Still I hear Kandahar is nice in August for your next trip!

Naples looks beautiful - from a boat off the coast - but the back streets and outskirts are horrendous. It's a real culture shock (a bit like going to the Warwick Estate in Knottingly [W Yorkshire] - Uuuuggghhh)

I saw the programme that Donal McIntyre did about Dublin and it was laughable, He made out that you could get shot, stabbed or beaten up for just walking down the street. I am from Dublin and I lived there for over 25 years and Ive never seen any of the stuff that he says happens. Also those parts of Naples that he goes on about are in the wrong part of town that no tourist would go near.

If you do ever go to Naples enjoy the food and drink it's great and dirt cheap and also stay near the waterfront as it's the nice part of the city.
