In contrast to the image it attempts to project globally, the UAE is a country where human rights are systematically violated and where women are routinely discriminated against.

The situation is bad enough if you are a citizen – your husband has a legal right to beat you and cannot be prosecuted if he rapes you – but it's significantly worse if you are a non-national in a country where racial discrimination is endemic. In one notable example in 2006, a woman went to the police alleging that five men had subjected her to a series of sexual assaults. According to one press report, "due to her conflicting testimonies, the authorities suspected that the woman was a professional sex worker and put her behind bars on charges of adultery". The judge warned the five men not to repeat such violations in the future, but only three were convicted, with sentences of three months in jail and 150 lashes. The woman was sentenced to five years' imprisonment and 150 lashes. Such incidents are not isolated.

A hidden army of domestic workers from India, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Bangladesh and Indonesia are excluded from the country's labour laws and routinely endure horrific physical, sexual and psychological abuse, not to mention appalling working conditions, which often equate to a life of perpetual servitude punctuated only by whatever sleep is granted to them.

Human Rights Watch has reported domestic workers being beaten with vacuum cleaners, basins, wires, chairs, wooden planks, broomsticks, knives, and iron bars, and the argument that their treatment constitutes slavery under international law is highly persuasive.

In January this year, the United Nations committee on the elimination of discrimination against women delivered unreserved criticism of the UAE's record on women's rights, even going so far as to directly question the UAE delegation on the reasons why the founder of the country's only shelter for abused women had effectively been hounded out of the country and the women formerly under her care transported to a detention centre where at least one took her own life by drinking bleach. The UAE delegation's response was to suggest the shelter had been a front for money laundering.

probably best if you leave it at home tbh....:

Travellers to the United Arab Emirates are being warned about its severe drug laws which have seen dozens detained for apparently minor offences.
Fair Trials International said arrests were being made over tiny quantities of drugs and over-the-counter medicines.

British tourist Keith Brown was sentenced to four years in prison after Dubai customs officers found a 0.003g trace of cannabis stuck to his shoe.

Fair Trials, a legal charity, said it has seen a steep rise in such cases.

Golden beaches

Possession of painkillers like codeine and some cold and flu medication could result in a mandatory four-year prison sentence, Fair Trials International said.

In one of the most extreme cases, it reported a man being held after poppy seeds from a bread roll were found on his clothes.

not very tolerant them UAE's

This labour shit keeps coming up over and over. They work from 7 to 4 yeah, live together in dozens and earn a fraction of what other foreigners do, but that's demand and supply. It's all better than their previous conditions and thats why they come. They feed gangs back in their country with their earnings here. The qualified south Asians get the jobs and living accordingly but what do you expects for the others? They live the way they can afford. Other countries don't bother feeding their own people and yet the UAE gets the stick for the people who come willingly to earn a fortune byntheir standards.

Respect for women? Give me a break. Go online and read the reviews written by foreign women about Abu Dhabi. Women are considered above men here, so you'd rather complain about respect for men. I've now read your other post. Laughable. So just because a woman got prosecuted for illegal prostitution there is no respect for women? And wives getting beaten with no rights? Bollocks too. There are courts and they can ask for divorce.

And finally that gay party story. First, they got released the next week. Second, they should've respected the culture and made it more private. Thirdly, if they were foreigners they would have been ignored. You see, in our country religion have some weight and it applies to it's people and that you have no right to complain about. It's the people decision.

Have you even lived in the Emirates or you are just reading that I'll driven shit?

yes pal - lived in bahrain for three years and travelled extensively around the emirates.

do you deny there is such a thing as indentured labour?

you say the woman in the story who was imprisoned for being gang-raped was a prostitute? any evidence? and even if she was does she deserve to have that happen (showed yer colours there pal) (and she wasn't). women are beaten and raped in UAE every day and they have no recourse to the law - that's a fact - prove it otherwise.

The "gay story" - no, they weren't all released and they weren't all foreigners.

and as for your comment about It's the people decision.. No it isn't - you have no democracy. or are you seriously gonna argue that everyone who lives in your country has the right to vote? FFS.

So you lived in the shit hole that is bahrain and you think you know the UAE very well?

No I don't deny there are indentured labour, whatever that word means, but i told you the situation as it is. They accept the pay and the conditions, otherwise there are other 200 countries in the world don't you think? No all people can enjoy the same life standard, not anywhere in the world.

The woman story, no I don't have an evidence, but do you? The only thing we know is that they went to court and it was dealt with there. In any case, to use this as an example of discrimination and lack of respect? That's not fair at all.

The gay story again, I haven't said they were foreigners, they were all locals. And they did got released, you won't know better than me.

And about the people decisions comment, i wasn't taking politically. I was taking about religion. If Muslims agree a thing shouldn't be allowed then it applies only on them and its nobody's right to complain.

And am quite happy I don't have to vote FYI. Democracy? The fuck is that, digging for each party and working for your reign. I quite enjoy having a long term owner.

I could pull a list of immoral and bad examples in every country you know. But its easy to hit middle eastern with over exaggerated propaganda.

If i walked down Glasgow with my UAE customs, i am sure ill get a lot of abuse from drunk or sober people. Rasict country. Is it fair?

there are so many anomalies in what you said that i can't even be arsed to reply to them all - suffice to say that it appears you agree that you have indentured labourers with no legal rights, women can be jailed for being raped, gay and lesbian people should be locked up an democracy is a bad thing.

like i said originally - if your crown prince believes in the same things then i'm not too fond. cheers.

Depends where you walked fella if you walked in some shitty estate and passed a load of asbo kids on the piss im sure you might get a few racist comments.

rasict country its far from, a country that gets walked all over yeah i would agree with that, but definitely not a racist country. Idont like how muslims are aloud to keep their as much of culture as possible here but if i was in another country i would respect and try to fit in theirs. But thats not any man or woman that is a muslim faults, its the goverment and local councils here. Im more pissed of with them than people from the middle east.

You are talking out of your ass. No, no, you are shitting out of your mouth.
We in Abu Dhabi whinge about how are foreigners made kings. Foreigners adore Abu Dhabi even more than the locals, I can put my throat on the line for that. There is a reason why foreigners are more than the locals, even if you didn't count the Indians. Bullshit about women too. If they hate it because they can't walk around naked then tough luck. Same with gays. They do whatever they want. Its not like they are sending troops to hunt them down. You just have to respect the street. You know fuck all about Abu Dhabi and yet come to look like the all knowing shit. Do you fuck?

It wasn't a political thread, but I love a bloody despot me.

AbDhabs you might wanna put your neck on the line next time! :-)

Arjan - why on earth take a light-hearted thread about a City supporter down this road? Even if our men were despots - and you dont have to be a despot to be a ruler - then personally I dont care if Hitler, Mussolini and fuckin Saddam Hussein had satellites watching City, although Saddam would've had to watch all that shite in the 90s poor fella.

I happen to know that Franco was a Real Madrid man though!
