State of the Old Trafford pitch

Postby Mikhail Chigorin » Sun Jan 30, 2011 2:19 pm

There have been some criticisms of the state of pitches we've recently had to play on i.e. at Leicester and at Villa, which may have been partly instrumental in affecting and disrupting our passing game.

On that basis and in view of our forthcoming visit to the Swamp, does anyone know what the current state of the Scum's pitch is ??

The reason I ask this is because, in the summer of 2003 (I know it's a long time ago now) I had to attend a computer software marketing demonstration in Manchester. The drawback was that it was being held at the Swamp in some of the executive suites there. At lunchtime, because there was nothing else to do and because it was free, I went on the ground tour that was on offer.

When we got down onto the pitch, its condition was appalling. I know that it was the summer and the football season was not long finished but the surface was very uneven and there were troughs and furrows in it, all over, which, with no exaggeration, would not have been out of place in a farmer's field.

I came away thinking that it definitely wasn't up to Premiership standards and was no better than some of the cart tracks I used to play football on in local parks, years ago when I was younger. However, since then I suppose these issues may have been addressed by their groundstaff which is why I'm asking those City fans who have been to the Swamp, of late, if they can comment on the playing surface there now.

If their pitch is still in a less than ideal state, would this offer any part explanation as to how, with a poorer side than in previous years, they are still winning the matches they are :- the argument being that they're used to playing on a poor surface and it affects visiting sides more than them, thus conveying an advantage.

If their pitch is good as ours is at Eastlands, then there would be no excuse of that nature for us not turning them over in their own back yard.

I feel that will be the case..................I have never missed a City game for years..never...but if he continues to play that "shit" against the top teams then Ill switch it off as it winds me up too much.

I agree Carl. Can he not see that the teams that have done well in this league do so because they attack; The Rags, Arse, Chelsea, they always seem to be going forward. We don't.
