Player-Manager

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Player-Manager

Postby Alioune DVToure » Thu Feb 03, 2011 11:12 am

Was this a strictly 80s/90s phenomenon? Can't think of one top flight European club that has one these days. I remember Dalglish at Liverpool, Gullit and Vialli at Chelsea, Lombardo at Palace and Hoddle at Swindon and Chelsea.*

Can anyone think of a high profile recent example? If not, why do you think they've died the death? Top clubs going for older, more experienced managers?

*And Peter Reid!

I think he was player-coach but never player-manager.

Player managers have gone the way of short shorts and multi coulored goalie kits.

Shame really. Also droopy nets.

It's more professional these days, football management. They expect potential managers to have qualifcations and bit of coaching experience. Most managers nailed the 4-4-2 team sheet on the wall of the dressing room and said "give your everything out there and make sure their number 10 will not be able to walk after game......oh and put the ball on me head son". That's why proper managers stood out so much back then.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Player-managers went out with white dog shite.

And in the modern game, would probably be about as useful as said shite.

they still exist but generally take a back seat playing wise and only really play in an emergancy.

Examples include stuart pierce for us, Gareth Southgate for Boro & Paul Dickov currently for Oldham.

All where/are in Dickov's case registered to play but will only play if they feel they have to, i.e in an injury crisis or last 10 mins of the odd game.
