Titleholder

2.03 The UEFA Champions League titleholder is guaranteed a place in the group
stage even if it does not qualify for the competition through its domestic
championship.

a) If the titleholder comes from an association entitled to four places in the
UEFA Champions League and qualifies for the UEFA Europa League
through its domestic competitions, the lowest-ranked club of the
association’s UEFA Champions League representatives is automatically 2
transferred to the UEFA Europa League (into the latest possible round
where there is a vacancy). In this case, the number of places to which the
titleholder's national association is entitled in the UEFA Champions
League and the UEFA Europa League does not change.

b) If the titleholder comes from an association entitled to four places in the
UEFA Champions League and does not qualify for the UEFA Champions
League or UEFA Europa League through its domestic competitions, the
lowest-ranked club of the association’s UEFA Champions League
representatives is automatically transferred to the UEFA Europa League
(into the latest possible round where there is a vacancy). In this case, the
national association of the titleholder is entitled to one additional place in
the UEFA Europa League.

Typical nonsensical UEFA legislation; if a team plays better than the Champion's Lg winners over a season & edges them out of qualification, they are punished because a club fromn their league has won the Champion's League. Utterly fucking puddled.

The law only exists thanks to the whingeing bindippers in '05.

But why can't they just solve it by putting the Chump's Lg winners into the playoff section or having a playoff game against the 4th placed team? That gives them, as winners, the chance to defend their trophy but doesn't punish anyone else, so surely everyone is then happy? Why punish a team that's legitimately qualified for the Chump's lg by demoting them? Surely if a team wins the bloody thing, it means that the teams who finished above them in the domestic league are most likely pretty worthy of a Chump's Lg place !?

I just don't get their thinking on this at all.

Their thinking is simples Ted...The team who wins the CL, is more than likely to come from that UeFA favoured elite group that UeFA have done, and are doing so much to protect their investments and over-inflated Euro incomes.
The club that finishes 4th, is quite likely not to belongto that group...so there you have it.

Last time this happened, Everton were the victims in favour of L'Pool.
This year it could well be us or Chelsea...who believe it or not, were never invited into the elite closed shop.

Everton were only victims of losing in the qualifying round of the CL that year John. They changed the rule to come into effect for the following year.If Everton had got through the qualifying game we would have had five teams in the group stages in that year.

Thank you for putting me straight on that Gillie. I had been under the impression that Everton had lost out to the politics of the issue.
Was it Everton that had qualified for the old European Cup the years that English clubs were banned after Heysal?
I know they have an issue with L'Pool for missing out on Europe one year?

What makes you say that? I think both are scenarios that could possibly happen. Legitimate question really.

Chelsea could very well go and win Champion's League, in fact I think that's their number one aim for the season and we could well finish 3rd.

Of course either could happen but I just don't think either will.Legitimate opinion as well.
We could win the league but we won't.

See, I don't see that as legitimate scenario. It's possible but will not happen. Us finishing 3rd and Chelsea winning Champion's League is very much possibility seeing as we are third right now and Chelsea are all but through to next round + have squad capable of winning the competition+ that's their number one aim especially now that they've had horrible season in league.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?
