A Different Perspective

Postby johnny crossan » Sat Mar 26, 2011 8:26 am

This is from a Gillingham fan site thread discussing the Play Off Final - some acute observations here (the OP is a City fan)

Jokerman:
The City fans I know rate that game as absolutely critical to their survival, and say that another season in Div. 3 would have caused all sorts of problems.
Agree with Smudge, City fans are ok. I think its the long-suffering which makes them so. I like to think of us as the Manchester City of League Two: huge squad; palatial ground; record of spectacular screw ups; and crap song.
AK, sympathize with your view. Wouldn't be our Gillingham anymore if they underwent a similar splurge to City's. Fortunately, we do not have to worry about that much, but if it happened I am sure we'd all go along for the ride. Better a bottomless pit of money than taking on unsustainable debt in a dash for greatness anyhow.
Nomadix, real City fans know that the curse is at work here; they have been given more than they could have dreamed imaginable and they know that the club is still going to fack it up. Wouldn't be City if they didn't right, Stuart Hall, Theatre of Base Comedy etc etc.
Actually, if the Gulf states now collapse into a smoldering heap I, for one, will blame it on the curse. They were doing ok until they got involved with City.
I am interested in Wayne and Mustafa's take on this, of course, since they were at Hyde Rd. that fateful day we forced a second replay with City. Barely escaped back to Manchester Piccadilly with their lives I'm told.

Alphabet King:
Each time the euro millions gets up to 100m i always start to think about what i'd do if i won the lottery. Would I buy gills and bankrole them to success? Obviously you can see by my last posts i wouldn't, but i would buy back our ground, give it to the club, and settle the debt. Put us on a level pegging with other clubs would be nice. I would then do nothing else and hire a MD that actually knew how to operate a football club replacing scally (and using his wage to pay for it).

Jokerman:
I'd acquire a double-breasted suit and fedora, learn to smoke cigars, get a decent XJ for once and install myself as maximum leader with responsibility for everything. I would commence a reign of terror and farce, re-hire the tea ladies; sign Robbie Savage, Craig Bellamy, Joey Barton and Marlon King, secure a sponsorship from Shepherd Neame involving free beer in the stands match day, make a pitch for Libyan investment; get involved in a sex scandal; commission a ghost writer for my story and sell the movie rights.

And that would be week one.

The first sentence of the first quote was about the playoff final, god knows what the rest of that waffle was. Was it "what would they do if they had City's money?" Who cares?

In your first line you said they were discussing the playoff final, in the title of the thread you said "different perspective" and the only sentence discussing the playoff final was someone mentioning what we thought.

The quotes don't discuss the playoff final, they aren't a different perspective and they aren't even the opinion of a Gillingham fan. Oh dear is fucking right, stick to posting the Sunday Supplement, cause this is obviously beyond you.

I think it's quite interesting to hear the thoughts of fans of clubs who have never really been our rivals.

The comments you have quoted seem to be from fairly intelligent and well informed people who have put some thought into their posts rather than just spouting the usual shite we get from other fans.

I found very interesting. We get a lot of shit from other fans because of the money, and some City fans feel that we sold our soul when the billions came rolling in, but secretly they all know that if it happened to their club there is no way they would turn their back on their club.
