That ranks as probably our only real quality away result in Europe since Paul Power scored at the San Siro imo. I still think we're riddled with mediocrity in our attacking play, but today was the kind of gritty victory the rags usually get credit for without having to actually do anything gritty.

There were just one or two little signs of football starting to break out in the 2nd half too. We may be on the verge of getting our shit back together.

Loved Mario's Mark Bright impression for the 1st goal. He put himself about a bit tonight without doing anything stupid. Well done to the lad.

I agree with that little Mario summary.Put himself about, helped get us a goal with his presence and was in control. Didnt actually play well though and missed two good chances but pleased that he got some decent game time.

that was what I call "entertaining European night". One for the video collection.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

It is an excellent point, Lee. I did not feel uncomfortable watching the game last night as opposed to say the Everton match a couple of weeks ago as the team selection felt right. You just knew that we were going to get a positive result last night and in truth should probably have won by a margin of at least two goals. It does bode well for the future now Yaya is back and the winning goal was sublime.
PS I wasn't impressed with the cartoon character either!

porto were good going forward but....

shit at the back - their keeper was useless
they are also a cheating bunch of cunts - i hate sides that dish it out but can't take it. as mentioned earlier in the thread, jose's spirit lives on at the dragao

Good away performance. We got better as the game went on, adjusted to the pace Porto had set earlier in the game, were patient and got our reward at the end.

I thought Lescott deserved a mention for an excellent game, alongside the returning Ya Ya with NDJ also "putting a shift in" if we are using footy speak.

A professional performance next wednesday and we will see out the tie.

Hulk is an excellent crosser of the ball, when he's not diving, tripping over his own feet, charging off the edge of the pitch, miscontrolling the ball, shooting from an impossible angle, ripping the turrets off tanks & hurling them at other tanks..etc
