I'm really not comfortable with this. Sky Sports announcing the ref a week before the game, and making it their top story? I mean, seriously, what the flying f*** is that all about? I'll bet even Marriner is slightly embarrassed by it all.
Let's look at this practically. Mancini will be questioned about the ref pre-match. He will, as always, remain neutral. Ferguson will claim Marriner is a good ref, or words to that effect. If we're honest, that gets even the most unbiased ref in your corner. He feels compelled to favour decisions to those who have complimented him. It's a human reaction.
I think Arsenal are partly to blame for all this. After we were mugged at the Swamp back in '04 (I'm not bitter, honest :) ), Mike Riley's name was dragged through the mud for the best part of a week in 2004. All his 50-50 decisions during the game were scrutinised, and he was made to look an idiot. A weak, incompetent ref. Who gets off scot-free? Wayne Rooney for the most contentious dive in the season to date, and Gary Neville for a clear red-card challenge on Reyes.
Suddenly, ref's names were in the limelight. Anders Frisk was brutally hounded out of a job by Jose Mourinho and Chelsea. Graham Poll was calling English players by their first names.
Who remembers the name of the ref who disallowed Sol Campbell's goal against Portugal in Euro 2004? Seriously? Or the ref who didn't give England's equaliser against Germany in the WC in 2010? Next to no-one. They decide not to flaunt themselves, and UEFA, rightly, protect them from the media.
