In any country including America. Soccer is short for Association Football. Guess where that comes from ?

But Soccer is a British word & it is very much the same sport as AsSOCiation Football whence the word Soccer derives, as opposed to your other examples of sports with differing rules.

If in doubt, look to the first governing body for game, formed in England in the 1800's - The FOOTBALL Association.

ADVT,
I am/was not against this Mate but thought WHY? was a reasonable question to ask.

As an open minded cynic, I am happy to welcome anything but I do think it wise to ask the questions first.
I KNOW THAT YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU UNDERSTOOD WHAT YOU THINK I WROTE, BUT I AM NOT SURE YOU REALISE THAT WHAT YOU READ IS NOT WHAT I MEANT

There are a lot problems with the game in this country; growing pains and other cultural idiosyncrasies that hurt our credibility, and that might even make serious people like the Sheikh think twice about investing in our clubs/leagues.

I can assure you that the actual names developed for the various 'football sports' being played in relative geographical isolation at east coast universities during the late 1800s will be pretty fucking far down the list of reasons not to invest in "that soccer bollox."
"Certainly our programme is a full one, but as a player and as a manager I've always felt that there is only one way to go into a season...and that's to try to win every game.... While we are in four major competitions we shall try to win four major competitions." - Joe Mercer

It's pretty obvious where they pinched 'football' idea from. As if anyone would call that fucking bollocks with pads and masks football, (when it only touches the foot on the odd occasion some overpaid cunt comes on to hoof it through the posts) unless they'd pinched the idea from elsewhere.

Why are British people so insecure about Americans calling football 'soccer'? I dont think I've ever noticed any other nationality bringing it up. Are we afraid one day they will become good at it?

Because it's yet another example of the yanks bastardising our language
