On this day - 1904

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

On this day - 1904

Postby gary james » Tue Apr 23, 2013 7:29 am

I know it's small consolation today, but it is worth remembering that today (23/4) is the anniversary of City winning the FA Cup in 1904. It was Manchester's first major trophy and led to huge celebrations in Manchester (the whole population turned out according to one report).

City also ended that season 2nd in the League - the highest a Manchester side had come at the time.

Of course it wasn't Manchester's first national honour - that came in 1899 when City won the Second Division title - but it was a key moment in creating Manchester's footballing identity. I'm writing about it for the 2013 FAC final programme (along with a piece on the 1999 play off semi final).

What is this you say Gary? I thought City had no history?

They soon broke up this City team. The rags ended up winning their first trophies with it....

I'll bet the Evening News was full of letters of disgust about City's form by Piccsgranddadnumberonblue and a demand for Joshua Parlby to be publicly hanged by AntColonies.

And today's anniversary (24th April)....

On this day in 1937 City won the League Championship for the first time. City fans celebrated with a pitch invasion (as they did in 68 & 12!). I've posted some cuttings on my twitter and facebook about this and also about City's 1904 homecoming parade - very significant in Manchester's development as a footballing city.
