The pride of Manchester? Five times more City fans turn up than United to parade

Manchester City may have just lost their Premier League title to bitter rivals United, but it appears the blue half of the city still have something to lord over their Red counterparts.

In 2011, both clubs paraded a trophy through the streets of Manchester, with City showing their FA Cup to the fans and United proudly carrying their 19th League title through the streets on an open-top bus tour.

But according to figures obtained by the Manchester Evening News, five times more City fans turned out than United supporters in their respective parades.


More than 60,000 City fans turned up to see Vincent Kompany, Carlos Tevez and Yaya Toure carry their first major trophy in 35 years, according to police. But a police briefing later estimated United only managed to attract around 12,000 fans for the celebration of their triumph six days after City’s parade.

City and United fans will regularly squabble over which club boasts more supporters in the city, and this evidence adds weight to the Blues supporters' argument.


But United fans may have been persuaded to stay indoors as their players took the trophy around the city, as dismal weather tarnished the ceremony. The City players were bathed in sunlight as they wound round the streets on the double-decker bus.

The Reds were beaten in the Champions League final by Barcelona two days before their morning parade, which may also have had some bearing on the attendance figures.


In the report obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, 30,000-40,000 City fans lined the streets to see their heroes, with an additional 30,000 inside the stadium for the free celebration evening.


The police operation covering the United parade was named Govan, presumably after manager Sir Alex Ferguson's home town in Scotland. City's operation was called Gallant.


There could be a repeat of the 2011 parades this season too. United have already wrapped up the Premier League title after a magnificent Robin van Persie hat-trick against Aston Villa on Monday night and, if City beat Wigan in the FA Cup final on May 11, Roberto Mancini will claim his third major trophy in as many seasons.

United will parade their 20th League trophy on May 13 – two days after City’s trip to Wembley.

I'd turn out in a force 8 because our lads deserve our support and it's great to rub the rag noses in the fact that they're the 'little' team in terms of support in Manchester - maybe they should parade in the Cayman islands which is, after all, where they're registered as a business for tax avoidance purposes?






PS. The rags embarrassingly dismal turnout was nothing to do with a touch of rain - their problem was the hellish roadworks on the M1 at Watford.

Yes, as overwhelming favourites and being a much better team, we should be able to win..
However, we need to be professional and actually turn up and 'win' this game, then have the parade..
The thought of us losing is unimaginable and seems not to have crossed many people's mind..I'm not being a party pooper btw, just want to see this job done first..

Couldn't agree more. In 1973 First Division team Leeds United were the red-hot favourites to win the Cup. They lost 1-0 to Second Division team Sunderland. And my favourite was in 1976 when lowly Southampton stuffed the Rags 1-0. We don't want to be added to that list.

Indeed. Wimbledon beating Liverpool also springs to mind, plus Coventry beating spuds.
