Nevin needs to update his knowledge, pitches are standard size these days except where ground constraints apply.

LOL ... true that ... But we won away to Plzen ... had we lost that one single game, the whole overall start right now would look very very shabby indeed ... and that's why next two games their week become extremely important, Bayern and Everton.

Ha ha ha, straight from the horses mouth ;-)

The Pitch

K.15. Unless otherwise permitted by the Board, in League Matches the length of the pitch shall be 105 metres and its breadth 68 metres.

K.16. The Board shall only give permission to a Club for the dimensions of its pitch to be other than as set out in Rule K.15 if it is impossible for it to comply with Rule K.15 due to the nature of the construction of its ground.

There's a downloadable FA handbook for clubs in pdf format which has all the rules in it for FA matches - Beefy just quoted the relevant rules from it. There is another thread floating about somewhere (from a while ago) where I quote the rules and give a link to the hand book. Basically things have been standardised where possible (ground constraints excepted) for the past couple of seasons.

So anyway, now that the pitch size is equal at all grounds (except those which are physically impossible to standardize), how can one account for nearly 4 years with no defeats at home, and such a big difference away.

I'm only using Villa as an example, yes they kept running, yes they kept going - but plenty of teams have done that against us at home in the last 4 years yet we lose only once or twice.

It seems that something else has to be in play - I wonder if, aside from the bad luck which we seem to have regularly away from home, is there a case for saying that the crowds impact is on the referee, NOT the players as you may think. Blowing up for a foul here, one there, etc disrupting play. Not really stuff you would notice, but which really makes a difference.

Even inexplicable refereeing still doesnt explain how home teams score enough to win a game with 4 shots on target, and we seemingly regularly lose away from home despite having had double, or even quadruple the opportunities.

Then you didn't do the course within the last two seasons and/or it was relating to clubs outside the Premier League/football league.

That is from PREMIER LEAGUE rules book. Official association football rules book still give minimum and maximum length and width.

I have to say I had completely missed Premier Leagues setting rules like that.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

The rule book even includes where and when the pre-match warm up can take place.

Spot on.

Appalling defending has been a factor too, alongside what looks like a commitment to wastefulness of possession in the final third.
