Joe Kinnear goes scouting, tries to sign his own player.

Joe Kinnear tried to sign midfielder that was already a NEWCASTLE player

Joe Kinnear thought he had spotted a special talent on a scouting trip to Birmingham – only to be told he was already a NEWCASTLE player, writes Alan Oliver in the Sunday People.

Toon director of football Kinnear raved to City chiefs about midfielder Shane Ferguson during the club’s Capital One Cup tie against Swansea in September. But when he asked about signing him, Brum bosses thought he was winding them up – because Ferguson is on loan at St Andrews from Newcastle until the end of the season.

Newcastle chiefs and manager Alan Pardew, who saw his side beat Chelsea 2-0 yesterday, were said not to be aware of Kinnear’s blunder.

A City source told Sunday People Sport: “Ferguson had a particularly good game that night and Joe Kinnear told one of our officials he was interested in signing him.

“At first our guy thought he was joking but then he realised Kinnear did not know Ferguson was already a Newcastle player.”

The 22-year-old, who can play in midfield or at full-back, signed a five-year contract with Newcastle in 2011 but spent three months on loan at Birmingham last season.

Blues boss and former Toon star Lee Clark agreed a deal in July to take the Northern Ireland international back on loan until the end of this season.

His last Premier League appearance for Newcastle was last December in the 7-3 defeat at Arsenal.

Anyone know whether this is true? Kind of stretches credulity.

Because its Kinnear a lot of it is probably true. Truly out of his depth. I feel sorry for the Newcastle fans. Like us they have had some low times in their recent history and they don't deserve a buffoon like Kinnear. Pardew actually deserves credit as he has to work with him which must be like explaining algebra to a 5 year old

I know kinnear is a bufoon, but are we really to believe he goes to games, watches a player once, does zero research and has license to whip out the cheque book?

Kinnear and Mike Ashley - sounds a perfectly normal way or them to operate.

Considering his success during the summer transfer window of signing no one, i seriously doubt he went to any games - at least not away from the bar!

He is a real life blend of Father Ted, Father Jack and a huge part of Dougal !

I suspect Kinnear is actually also disguising himself as Ed Woodward - who the fuck would really be named after the Equaliser - its a made up name!

It was in the Sunday People too, so if it is rubbish then yet smother failure by journalists to check their stories properly.
