Formations

One thing that has occurred to me after signing Otamendi is where will he fit in and who might make way. Could it be that we go with three centre backs and change our formation slightly?

A side could consist of say Hart, Kompany, Mangala, Otamendi, Fern, Yaya, Sterling, Silva, Navas (KDB?), Aguero, Bony. Three at the back and a couple of helpers in Fern/Yaya. Navas and Sterling will track back if necessary but we have pace and width to hurt sides and we have two up front to feed off each other.

Thoughts?

I think we'd be murdered out wide mate. Think you need proper wing backs and not wingers to play that system, the only wing back we have is Kolarov.

I'm not quite sure how that would work and be able to fit in all the names you mention. With 3 at the back the team would be something like:
Hart
Otamendi Komps Mangala
Zaba kolarov (wing backs)
Fern 1 Yaya
Silva Aguero Sterling
It's not a bad side but you can't fit Navas an Bony in as well.

There are many schools of thought regarding the team balance if you go with 3 at the back.

My thoughtsare you if you are playing with wing backs who are 1st choice defenders and not midfielders or attacking players. Then you don't need 2 defensive midfielders.

I would play

3 CB
2 WB
1 DM
1 playmaker
2 supporting the attack
1 up top

5-4-1 converting to a 3-6-1/3-4-3

That's a good answer. The point I was introducing is based on the fact we have three quality centre halves and in most games have the majority of possession with a large chunk of the oppositions possession in their own half. Thus our defenders don't actually have a lot to do. Relieving one defender to supplement the attack won't work for every game, but for a lot of them it will lead yo more dominance by us in terms of possession and where we have the ball.

You could almost do away with 2 supporting the attack and have in there if the WBs do their job correctly. That frees up space for another playmaker or forward. Barca seem to do OK with three at the back and we now have the players who can fit the system, unlike when Mancini tried it

Barca play 3 at the back? I don't watch them all that often but anytime I have they have two centre backs - Pique and Mascherano and two full backs - Alba and Alves.

We don't have the players to play it imo. Rodgers tried playing Sterling in that wide role with three at the back and it was a disaster. Now if Milner was still here then I could see it working with him one side and Kolarov the other.
