This is a rare picture of one of my favourite City players

Image

he could have been a City great but a knee injury caused by a goalkeeper's dive ruined his career

He was my favourite player when I first started watching City in the late 50's. He played right half if I remember right, but didn't start enough games as Ken Barnes was an automatic starter in that position usually. He had a lot of skill on the ball and easy to watch, whereas Barnes was a great passer of the ball. Some things you always remember, eh.

Left half I'm pretty sure. Certainly left footed and I remember him hitting a screamer in the mud, possibly v Grimsby in the cup. Our only quality kid in those years in what was a depressing team of mainly journeymen and crocks.Played with his shorts hitched up as I recall. If you went to main road then you probably heard my Dad shouting"get dressed McTavish" lol

Sadly David has passed away

Fred Eyre has paid tribute to former City player David Shawcross who has died aged 74.

David Shawcross, who has died aged 74, could have been a Manchester City great had his career not been ruined by injury.
The former Blues left half suffered a terrible cruciate ligament injury in a collision with Wolves' goalkeeper Malcolm Finlayson and was never the same again.

And Fred Eyre, who was at City at the same time, believes he could have not only nailed down a place in the great Sixties team, but also have been pitching for a place in the England 1966 World Cup-winning squad.
“I rated him extremely highly,” said Eyre of the left half, who battled back from the injury but was released by City in 1965 and went on to play for lower league clubs.

“He was a great passer of the ball, an orthodox left half and a real natural talent.
“The immediate impression of Dave was that he was going to go all the way.

Always sad when one of our old players passes on. Never saw him play but heard positive bits and pieces about him down the years. God bless him.
