If I am not mistaken, in later games, under similar conditions,City players, (some/all?) also took to wearing tights under similar conditions. This at a time when we look back and consider it a macho period of hard manly players.
The truth is that under freezing conditions, legs and muscles can sieze up and be more prone to injury. If it were stockings and suspenders, maybe the critics would have a point.
