Controversial Opinions

Controversial Opinions

Postby edge275 » Sun Jan 24, 2010 12:06 pm

We've all got a few. You know the kind where if you mentioned it in the pub or around a bunch of mates most of them would think you're talking shite. An opinion that goes against the general concensus.

Here's a few of mine.

I actually think Sam Allardyce is an excellent manager. Although I concede he played shite long ball football at Bolton his results were amazing. UEFA cup football, even challenging right to the end for champions league one season on an absolute pittance.

Also reached a Carling Cup final. They also used to regularly cause upsets with the top 4.

Let's remember as well that despite the long ball football Bolton fans did get to see the likes of Anelka, Okocha, Diouf who are skilled players on the ball. He also signed the legendary Hierro and Campo.

He then went to Newcastle and were midtable, which we can now see in hindsight was also an excellent achievement considering as well that he was under immense pressure.

Another opinion of mine is that I think 'Sky Sports sources understand' is very reliable. Although something might not come off eg such a club is in for a certain player it doesn't mean that it wasn't true, just that the signing didn't come off.

Feel free to put your balls on the line next to mine and add yours.

I can't believe you have only listed two....

Anyway, the only one I can think of at the moment is this: I don't think Shay Given is a great goalkeeper. He's a great shot-stopper, but not a great goalkeeper. There, I've said it.

Nah sorry, got to disagree with you there Edge ("you're talking shite"). Sky journalists use the scattergun approach often having a couple of stories on the same subject with polar viewpoints, of course they will claim to get it right, not too hard when you cover all the bases imo

I suppose mine is, and it's been posted before, that whilst I loath Chuckle 1, I have a begrudging respect for him and his loyalty to his club

I am getting to [strike]quite like[/strike] not really hate Leeds - use to be my second most hated team, but all the Leeds fans I know now or have met in the last 10 years are all pretty decent.

If I could sign any player in the Premier League, it would be Wayne Rooney

I actually agree with you here chief.

I was watching a game a few weeks ago in the pub and a guy I was speaking to put up a solid case against Given. He argued that good defences fell to bits when he was in goal, which I couldn't really find fault with. But his main point was that Given refuses to come out on crosses and that he looks good because, in refusing to come, it seems he makes no mistakes.

I watched Given carefully for the next few games and I couldn't disagree at all. While, as you say, he has great reflexes, the best of any 'keeper in the world (imo), he's not commanding enough to be a world great and he doesn't take charge in the 6 yard box.

Did you watch any of the Chelsea FA cup game on telly. Their reserve was in goal, Hilarious. But he came for loads of crosses and totally dominated the area. If he was coming out the defenders knew it because there was a clear shout from him. At one stage a defender even ducked to make room for him. And he is only the reserve.

Personally I'm fed up with corners coming into our 6 yard box uncontested by Given. And I mean the 6 yard box as well, not even the penalty area. Anything in the 6 yard box should be dealt with by the goalie. Sometimes a cross comes in and I'm thinking "oh sh*t here we go"

Agree with the Rooney one

My personal two controversial ones are

I loved watching Eric Cantona (...especially playing for that lot).

I actually quite like Roy Keane as a person...find him quite refreshingly direct and his comments often make me chuckle

Yeah I agree with everything you say. Though at his age I don't think his style of keeping will change.

There's always one who spoils the fun. The idea of this thread is that people can post what they really think about something no matter how controversial without being victimised.

Now get the fuck out this thread.
