Did anyone get the chance to see the new era of terrestrial televised football, the highlight of all highlight shows? If you didn't know they've now moved to Salford Quays with a brand new purpose built stage and now we must be entering a new phase of Premier League briefs from the cream of British broadcasters. Or are we?
So, how about the intro, has that changed? Well, no.
How about the pundits, they've got to have changed? Well, errrrrrr, no again.
So what about the dialogue, the indepth analysis and unbias opinions from the experienced staff with a plethora of knowledge? That'll be a 'No' again.
The intro still has the Joe Hart 'Welcome to Manchester' banner followed immediately by the 'World Class' Wayne Rooney overhead. Then up pops Lineker, this time sporting some sort of stubble that looked like he'd just not bothered to shave. Then of course, onto the 'Biggest' game of the day, a game that must've had so much action that it would've been a sin not to show it as their premier highlight. Starting with a 2 minute intro for Fergie's Silver Jubilee, a hallmark event that should've had him escorted by the Blues and Royals with the streets of Trafford lined with prisitinely turned out soldiers bringing themselves to attention as he passed in a silk lined coach.
I digress, back to the game, the one with all the action. Wait, Auntie, you've only got 2 minutes on the first half display and we're now into 4 minutes added time - this can't be right. Oh wait, what a goal, that was definately worth waiting for. What a great cross from Nani and an even better flick from Welbeck that has everybody scrambling. This boy should be a definate England starter with the quality of that flick. Wait one, that didn't go in off Welbeck, it seems to go past him and off the head of a shimmering tangerine coloured cranium that I'm sure I once seen playing in the Blood Red livery of United! It was, it came off Wes Brown, that ex-defender of the cause that is all things English football. Surely not, surely that couldn't have been a great headed goal for his former team. Did he forget who he played for for a second? Did the good old days of playing for the Devils suddenly bring him to believe he was back at the sacred ground, the one where his manager once stomped the turf? Surely not?
So what came next, oh that was it, the brilliant trap by Rooney, the depth touch of England's only World Class player. And the offload, that was just outstanding that the commentator's praise of him was noted as 'Oh, what a touch that was ....... and a good pass as well', he truly is the greatest striker we have ever seen. Or should that be midfield meastro, I'm not quite sure now! But, if he is a midfield meastro how can we now say he's as good as Pele? Anyway, let's just agree that he's our only World Class player who has proved to be the most crucial part of our World and European squads at tournaments, if that's OK with you.
Now, onto the rest of this, Match of the Day. Well, nothing else really to say, they strolled the win and looked like they could beat Barca in the peak, or even the league leaders on a nice Sunday in October. Blinking hell, what am I saying, I forgot that they got beat by an incomparable score that will go down in the annals as one of the best (or worse) days in Manchester's history; who was it that they played again? Such a shame for Sir Alex Ferguson and his gang of World Class players, of which Rooney is the shining star. Luckily there was no mention of this by the 3 hosts, those expert pundits who must know more about modern day football than any of those younger generation that have still got an inkling at what the Premier League is all about; thank God that the Beeb keep paying mine, and your, hard earned television licence on.
Oh, and I nearly forgot, there was one more incident, a very minor one where they thought that Sunderland could have had a penalty. For a second they actually gave it, could you believe that! Luckily, sense prevailed and the ref overidden the assistants flag with a quick chat to put him straight, afterall, how could he have seen a handball when the majestic Man United have no hands? Silly man.
And that was it, the rest didn't really matter. The City comeback at QPR (although the 'Silva better than Rooney' comment caught my ear, unbelievable!), the Toon Army marching onwards and upwards taking second place away from United for a while for a while, or even the great point that Swansea earned against the former Champions of Europe - luckily there weren't 2 bitter old Scousers on the panel, that'd have been a nause.
So, in short, it's good to see that things are changing for the better over at the MotD studio's and now it's so close I might even take a walk over and see if I can get some autographs from those bastions of football. Good on you I say, may it reign long and proud. Now they're closer to the Theatre of Dreams they may even be able to get to watch a match or two, courtesy of old Uncle Alex.
