A new book about City's origins out now

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

A new book about City's origins out now

Postby MCFChistory » Thu Mar 14, 2013 3:49 pm

I've just published an ebook on City's origins, called A Man's Game: The Origins of Manchester City Football Club. It's the result of more than four years' research, and as well as revealing new information on City's origins it also offers a new explanation of how and why team sports became established in Manchester from the 1860s. The book:

~ Explains why 1884, not 1880, is the correct formation date for the club that became Manchester
City FC, and reveals a previously unknown football club that forms a crucial part of City's ancestry.

~ Reveals recently-discovered evidence that explains why Gorton AFC wore a Maltese Cross on their
shirts, and names every person on their 1884-85 team photo.

~ Provides new reasons for the creation of St Mark's football club, and a new explanation of why it
folded three years later.

~ Uncovers new evidence of how Maine Road got its name.

~ Offers a detailed insight into what life was really like in Gorton in the Victorian period, revealing
the township's ethnic, religious and political divisions. Discoveries include the violent suicide of
a St Mark's clergyman that took place a few weeks before Arthur Connell took charge of the church
and a transvestite sex scandal that hit West Gorton months before St Mark's FC was formed.

The ebook is initially available at a discounted price of £2.50 (the full Amazon price is £3.50). I've also set up an affiliate programme with Mancityfans so if you buy it through one of the links below 10% of each sale will be donated to the forum to help with running costs.

You don't need a Kindle to read this book. You can download a free app to read it on your phone, computer, tablet etc. Details of how to get a Kindle app can be found on my new site http://www.manchesterfootballhistory.com/.

If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them.

Is this going to see the light of day as a hardback/paperback book?

If there's a demand I'll release it as a paperback later in the month.

lol. Bringing out a paperback version is a pretty straightforward thing to do, but it would probably only be available to buy online and not in the bookshops.

Why not approach the club shop? Surely they would be interested in taking it?

I'll be looking at all the paperback options in the next few days, but I wanted to see what the initial demand for the ebook was first.

How interested the club will be in my findings remains to be seen. I've discovered a lot of information about Arthur Connell, for instance, that doesn't exactly fit with its marketing (Connell was accused of the "lowest form of sectarian bigotry" by one contemporary newspaper).

Thanks. I appreciate the feedback. Would you buy a paperback version online rather than at a bookshop?

Just to clarify - I don't live in the UK, so buying it online would be the only option.

It sounds interesting, but how have you found new evidence to prove our history (Or disprove in some cases?)?

I want to read this but I don't do the electonic inter-age, I've only just got myself a debit card card, never mind a Kindle!

Panic over, I managed to email it to my kindle. Off to bed to read it now!

Thanks for arranging the special price and the affiliate deal Andrew, much appreciated mate.

I've found a huge amount of new evidence that significantly changes the story of the years 1880-85. For instance, I've discovered that St Mark's formed a rugby club a week before the football club was created and have also found evidence of a previously unknown West Gorton club that appears to have a stronger claim to being City's forerunner than St Mark's. I've also found details of the first game of association football to be played in Manchester (in 1876) and much more. Over the next few weeks I'll be running stories on my new website using some of the material in the book.

Regarding the "no history" jibe, I would challenge the fans of any other club (with the possible exception of West Ham) to show us a more interesting or detailed early history than this one.

I'm currently sorting out a paperback version and will have something definite to announce in the next few days. It will probably be 3-4 weeks before you can actually read it.
