Video Technology in the FA Cup

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Video Technology in the FA Cup

Postby Beefymcfc » Fri Jan 08, 2016 6:57 pm

...... from next season. Only for specific purposes such as penalty calls, sending off etc.

Is this the end of the game as we know it?

How will they do it? If someone goes down in the box, is play stopped and we go to videos? Do we wait until ball goes out of play (if yes what happens if the other team scores from the counterattack?)?

Interesting.

There will be winners and losers.

What's the chances we get fucked over whilst the rags and dippers get the benefit of the replays?

I assume it will be something like the NFL, where the situation is allowed to play out first and then the result of that play stands if, upon review, the video does not suggest that a different decision should have been made.

I have huge concerns about the integrity of those involved, however. If Mark Twattenburg was watching a video to see if there has been a handball by Mangala in the box, for example, and happened to see a slight push by Ota on the opposition striker, who is to say he wouldn't award a penalty anyway and say that's what he was looking for?

It was only a matter of time as the referees have not got better and the cost of a ref mistake could be millions in the wrong game.

I really hope they broadcast the TMO commentary like they do in Rugby and cricket. There is no need to be secretive about what they are saying.

Posted this in the penalty thread. Apparently only trial for FA cup. Possibly in in 2017/18

I think it's about time they got these decisions correct tbf.

As doomy pointed out if refs allow players to roll about for 3 minutes time wasting only to get up and walk back on the pitch I'm sure they can make 30 seconds to get a key decision right.

I'm all for it. Positives outweigh the negatives, if they do it like the rugby.

Didn't want to steal your thunder mate (didnt see it), definitely worth a thread of its own. I'm one of those that wasn't to see minimal impact with technology but want to see the right decisions given.

The problem is that it looks like ref's actually take direction on games, or give them their own certain view. Who's to say that technology can't be used in the same way; after all, it could be used as twice the tool?

No that's cool lol. Agree it needs its own thread.

I think it will help in the long run as refs that don't use it and give shit decisions will have no excuses. Hopefully it will lead to some form of consistency. Hopefully.

Fully agree and it is about bloody time to do it. It's been done in Rugby and Cricket and other games for years now and it works well. Can't see why it cannot work just as well in football.

They will use it in the Dutch cup next season as well. The video ref will only look at penalty decisions, goals and red cards.
I haven't read any details on how it will work, though.

It's pretty much in place now anyway isn't it? I mean there is a monitor on the sidelines the 4th official can use and the refs and linos are all wearing headsets and can be in contact with the 4th official

This is a worrying bit. why not replay on the screens in grounds where available

Video decisions would be time limited and, unlike rugby, would not be replayed on big screens inside stadiums.

Seems to me it'll level the playing field in our favour. Harder to cheat.

I doubt they'd show it as the average over aggressive fan would kick off if they see a replay one way and the ref gives it the other.

Most Football fans aren't as accepting as the rugby lot.

So only the dodgy 4th official will get to see it? Not much transparency in it then. They should show the replay so everyone can see it if the ref was wrong he's overruled

There will need to be some way of advising the fans of the decisions or it will be baffling to those in the ground that didnt see the initial issue
