Even worse when we have an opportunity to receive the ball goal side, (may have been Aguero or Nasri who would have been thru on goal had he looked up) our players step infront of the ball and play it back

We don't break quickly enough to get the run in teams. So with the slow build up it's tough to play off the shoulder of defenders. That and the insistance on playing to feet rather than into space. The build up also means it's always compressed up top and teams can organise defence. The way these are playing we should be able to break quickly and go for a counter once in a while.
