As Roberto Mancini concentrates on building a winning team, HH Sheikh Mansour has turned his attention to building Eastlands into the focal point of Manchester.

The club has already announced plans to develop the area around Joe Mercer Way and the North Plaza to include 'City Street', a brand new area for food, retail and entertainment.

Crains reported earlier in the month that engineers, Arup and cost-consultants, Turner & Townsend were selected to prepare 17 acres of land around CoMS ahead of major redevelopment plans for East Manchester. So far, only preliminary work has begun on the site, removing underground structures such as old mines, and treating excavated materials.

On top of this, the old Clayton Aniline site housing project appears to have been shelved, with reports that the area will become the home of Manchester City's brand new £50m training complex.

It is thought that Arup may also be involved in the extension of the 47,726-capacity stadium.

This all sounds extremely exciting, but aside from the 'City Street' plans, what exactly is Manchester City planning to do at the other sites in and around Sportcity that would make it the focal point of Manchester?

Image

1. CoMS site

Work has already begun on the CoMS site, which has been earmarked to become one of the countries leading tourist hotspots and the envy of the footballing world.

According to a source close to the club: 'The club's owners want 100,000 (visitors) a week. That's their target.

'It's ambitious, but so are the club's owners. There's a feeling that they are putting the money into it and they have a very clear idea about the returns they would like to see.

'It will have to be something really special or a collection of things that keep people coming into the area. The club's owners want east Manchester to be a global destination.'

It is believed that ADUG are attempting to get the FA Museum moved to Eastlands as part of the development. Other rumoured plans include a 5-star hotel, luxury commercial office space, high-end retail and leisure facilities and a high-technology centre. Designs are yet to be released, but speculation is rife that two major iconic landmarks will be part of the plans to make Eastlands one of the main attractions of not just Manchester, but the world. Plans could be very similar to the Etihad Stadium development in Australia.

The CoMS proposal will incorporate the brand new Metrolink line which is already under construction, and will possibly involve the expansion of the canal.

Earlier plans to include the much anticipated super casino appear to have been scrapped in favour of a more family orientated proposal, although it is thought the casino will be located elsewhere in East Manchester should it be omitted from the CoMS site.

2. Clayton Aniline site

The Clayton Aniline site is thought to be the location of Manchester City's brand new £50m training complex after the original housing project was reportedly shelved.

A club source told the Sunday Mirror of the proposal: 'This will be much more than just a training ground. It will be the club`s headquarters and will be the envy of football.

'It is more proof that the owners are serious about turning City into one of the biggest clubs in the world. It will also help to attract the top players because it will be the best of its kind in terms of training, medical and rehabilitation facilities.'

It is rumoured that the clubs new training ground will include around 20 pitches, a club hotel and house Academy players in on-site apartments.

The Clayton Aniline project is purely speculation at this point in time, as are most of the plans, which are yet to be officially announced.

One thing is for sure though, Manchester City's owners are set to not only put the club on the map, but also make sure that Manchester itself reinforces its status as one of the worlds top cities.

The future is bright, the future is blue.

Can just see the players now, finishing a warm-up session at the training ground and taking a short-cut through ASDA to get to the match! Underground moving walkway I reckon.

20 pitches seems a little extreme. One for each possible climate eh?

You'd have 3 or 4 for the first team as training on one pitch for 38 weeks a year would ruin it by December.
2 for the reserves
2 for the youth team
1 each for academy matches played from U9-U16 so a total of 8.

That's 16.

City stadium will be a glowing blue beacon
Exclusive by Deborah Linton

March 17, 2010

This is how City’s Eastlands stadium could look next season – under the first phase of plans to transform the land around Sportcity.

Artists’ impressions, revealed by us today, show how the ground will become a glowing blue beacon with the installation of an illuminated halo above the club shop and the creation of new fan zone, City Street.

Huge photo-montage posters will also be hung outside the ground, featuring the faces of hundreds of fans and lyrics to club songs. More than 100 benches around Eastlands will be painted sky blue and feature club stories and images.

If approved, the initial plans will see the creation of City Street in time for the start of next season – turning the Joe Mercer Way approach to the stadium into a ‘market place’ fan zone.

City's £1bn plan for Eastlands

The makeover is part of a masterplan that will transform 200 acres of land in east Manchester into a huge sports and leisure complex with the City of Manchester Stadium at its heart.

The scheme is planned by the club with Manchester city council and regeneration company New East Manchester. A new training complex, shops, restaurants and a hotel are planned. An extension to the stadium’s north stand, boosting capacity to 60,000, is also planned.

And although the sketches, submitted by City to council planners for approval, appear to show a bigger than usual north stand, the club said this was simply an artist’s take on the stadium.

A club spokeswoman said: “The delivery of the premium experience for our supporters is at the heart of our club’s planning. This concept is at a planning stage only but, in partnership with Manchester council and New East Manchester, we are investigating opportunities to enhance the area and the experience for fans and visitors on match and events days.”

Work on the wider redevelopment scheme is expected to begin within the next five years.

Nice work David...

The roof of the stadium looks different. Is that taking into account an increase in capacity???

From what I can work out, it doesnt include the extra capacity..... I thought they were going to expand the North Stand.... the roof looks a bit bigger on the West Stand (to the right of the image) so my only guess is that they are going to put the infrastructure in place for when the come to expand the North Stand.... who knows, we need someone who is more clued up on this and these things than I am......

I know I'm 100 miles away Kiers, but there's no need to shout lad! This technology business does the trick nicely fella! ;)

Are you doing designs for the stadium that's why you're shouting?

I thought City Street was going to be along Joe Mercer way only.... looking at that image it looks as though there are stalls of some dsecription around the perimeter of the car park for the club shop.....

Nothing more, I just like the way they are making the shop the focal point, and I can just imagine that area bustling with people before and after a match!

Man City chief pulls out of MIPIM appearance

Garry Cook, chief executive of Manchester City Football Club, has cancelled a scheduled appearance at the MIPIM property exhibition in Cannes.

Cook was due to speak at the event on Thursday afternoon, along with Sir Howard Bernstein, chief executive of Manchester City Council, and Eddie Smith, chief executive of New East Manchester.

However, the club is understood to be unhappy about press reports last week which speculated a £1bn investment would be made in the area.

A source close to the club said it had never disclosed any possible spending and the coverage had "disappointed" its Abu Dhabi-based owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan..

New East Manchester had hoped Cook would take part in a further announcement on the regeneration of the area at MIPIM tomorrow. The announcement will still go ahead, but without the Man City chief executive.

I could be wrong in saying this, but I'm pretty certain it was only Crains who had stated that Cook was going to be there.....

I wouldnt be at all surprised if Cook turns up pissed to the fans forum tonight and spouts about how the stadium will be the biggest in the world ever, and how City street will actually be called City City, and bang on some more about some shite or other!

I also wouldnt be surprised if our owners made sure cook was as far away from this announcement as possible!

Also for those Twitter users, if you follow mcrMIPIM you will get live updates during the announcement later on..... I've been following for a couple of days now, and yesterdays and todays tweets were frequent and quite informative! I learnt today that Peters Square is going to be redeveloped, the only traffic around the area will be trams and there is going to be a 250 bed, 32 storey 5 star hotel, not quite as big as beetham towers but still significant on the skyline.
