Nah, I remember this well from the time, and I was actually discussing it with someone the other day.

I reckon this must have been around the time that he went to Rangers in 1994. He was class up in Scotland; what a signing he would've been at the time.

Ah well. Just one of many 90s disappointments. File it alongside the young Figo fuck-up.

I didn't know that but I do remember what a shambles we were at the time and I saw how good a player Brian Laudrup was in his pomp. There was not a chance in hell he would hae signed for us in 1994.

When in '94 did he sign for Rangers? We were pretty good at the start of the 1994/95 campaign, irrespective of what was going on behind the scenes.

Stefan Effenberg was the one for me. He was my all time favourite player. The Daily Mail ran a story that he'd signed for City after Bayern. Not that we were interested, but that he'd signed! I was over the moon. I'm stil waiting to see his first match....

That rings a very vague bell somewhere in the back of my mind. A bit like Faustino Asprilla's Darlington career!

This news has just blown everything else today out of the water.

Can't even begin to say how excited I am. This is a real game changer and you can tell by the attitude of the Sky pundits they realise it too. He is the best, most sought manager in world football, and he's coming to the Etihad. Who knows what players will follow. But it's a safe bet if the best manager wants the best players and we have the wherewithal to make it happen, then there is a really good chance it will.

It is a real statement of intent and the rags must be secretly shitting themselves. This deal will elevate us even further in terms of revenue, popularity, exposure, global standing, sponsorship, ability to attract the top players and the top prospects in world football. The timing of it and the press release issued by the club showed class (as always) and the fact this wasn't something done last week, or last month or even six months ago. This has been part of the project for a long time and just shows how far we have come.

I don't think it an understatement to say today will be a watershed moment for the club. Enjoy the ride fellow blues, it's gonna be a massive blast.

Never under estimate our owner.

This has been planned from day one.

Don't be surprised if a certain No 10 rocks up at our place in the summer!

Echoing a lot of others but I'm delighted we've got Guardiola he suits us perfectly for the next stage of our evolution.

Pellegrini is a very gifted man who deserves the utmost respect & the lads should all knuckle down now & give him the send off he deserves. I'm glad he was allowed to make his announcement earlier as it shows an element of control & lets the man retain his dignity & it steals the moronic thunder of all this transfer deadline day bollocks.

Taking it as given that this has been the plan from day one, or at least a long while, I wonder what the crystal ball says for 5 years in the future. Do we expect Pep to make this a career move for the long term? .Once we have the best, we can attract the best, so either will be the next big name or else Vieira who is still an unknown quantity at management level...I guess time will tell.

My guess is Vieira will be given a couple of seasons to prove himself in New York, before becoming Pep's assistant here for one or two years. He'll then take over and maybe Pep has a couple of years in New York before taking the Spain job.

It's almost like this is all planned at a level never seen before in football...

Hopefully those players that might feel like theyre "not Pep players" will try very hard to prove themselves instead of checking out and not caring because they assume theyre off in the summer.

Danny Murphy doesn't believe David Silva will suit Pep Guardiola's pressing game, with the current Bayern Munich boss taking over at Manchester City at the end of the season.
