Iran were the better team, then Hennessy was rightly sent off for a mad challenge outside his area, Iran then just went for it and scored a really good goal, then Wales were caught on the break for 2-0 , Wales were poor throughout Bale anonymous, makes England look good doesn’t it

Since the 60s, for me, the WC was the pinnacle.
International teams were better than club sides, players usually played their club football in their country of birth, it was a real treat to see the great players in their national sides complete every four years.
The world was less complex, pre (massive) globalization, pre (massive) FIFA corruption, pre the granny rule, pre (massive) movement of people.
Football was football. Politics were kept out of it. No country was without fault. But everyone knew that football was not there to address politics or ram ideologies down people's throats. Football was an escape, a distraction to all the crap.
Brazil 1970 was the best team I ever saw. Pure joy to watch and indulge in the football, nothing else.
I will watch this WC, in Winter (sad -greed and corruption), but something fundamental has changed in the World, the WC will never be what it used to be.

Good post, mate, and very much resonates with my own thoughts/feelings. I’m one who who will support England and even change schedules to ensure I get to see the game. This time, I walked away from the second half of the first game and even now, I’m trying to summon the energy while I watch.

The draw to give it to Russia and Qatar did something for me, and I’m not sure I’ll get it back until FIFA show some real integrity instead of personal and corporate greed.
