If you look at the squads on paper of the top teams in the premiership, my minimum guess at league position with 7 games to go would be that we should be 5 points clear at the top.

90% of our team were all here last year for their bedding in period, only Aguero is new to the league whose a regular and hes the top goalscorer. Nasris new to the team but he knows what the Prem is about.

We are 2 points behind United with 1 game more played.

We are struggling away from home and are relying on other teams to get us back into the title race by taking points off United.

We are blowing it at the moment and need some devine intervention.

Lev Bronstein wrote:Should the season finish on tuesday with the rags 5 points in front - but us 13 in front of third, Arsenal; then I wouldn't be happy. But, I wouldn't be saying the season had been a disaster either. That position would represent progress - not the progress we all hoped for when we were eight points in front, but progress nonetheless.

It's been a strange contrast to last season. Last year we improved as time went on. This year we seem to be getting weaker. There will be a number of reasons for this. For example. last year we hardly ever played, or at least started, with two up front. Now we seem to be doing this from the beginning - maybe that's weakened the midfield so we can't stifle the opposition and contol the game as we once did? Whatever the reason a bit of calm analysis is called for, and the management - from the Sheikh downwrds are going to need to cast a cold eye.

One of the often quoted advantages of having a bad run is that you find out the worth of the men around you. Everybody seems great when you're winning. When you have a bad patch you can see more clearly who are the sheep and who are the lions.

So: should we sell Dzecko, Mario and Tevez; bring back Guidetti and buy two new forwards? Do Gazbaz and Nige need to be replaced by two more dynamic players? Should we cash in on AJ and get a more consistant replacement? Is there an up and coming young centre back who can be fourth choice so we can ship out Savic? Can Siva play for a whole season - if not how do we best use him? And so on.

Are the backroom staff up to the job to maintaining the fitness and sharpness of the squad for the whole of the season? Has Mancini made the best use of his resources? Are Platt and Kidd good enough to be part of the leadership group?

But, the season doesn't end on monday after the rags play Blackburn. We could lose another 5 games and end up in third place. The rags arrogance could yet get the better of them, we could regroup come out fighting, regain our early season form and finish top.

All that is in the future, and the thing about the future is that it hasn't happened yet.

This is an excellent, thoughtful post with a lot of perceptive points made, especially with regard to our playing with two 'up front'.

Some critical questions raised as well, not least "Are Platt and Kidd good enough...." That's certainly one which needs answering.

An awful lot in this post to ponder, so well done to you LB for listing our inherent problems in a calm and analytical manner.

If we don't win it this year I'm not too bothered. Been watchin City since '75 so finishing 2nd equals the best i've seen. Learn from it, come back stronger next year, It's just delaying the inevitable that's all.
Balotelli......that's a brilliant finish.

I'm an professional optimist and I'd say now we blew it when you first asked the question.

Unlike the knee-jerkers who are trying to read this through their broken lcd screens, It isn't really a surprise is it. We bottled it, players and manager clammed up - it is contraversial but the players more than the manager for me.
Apart from the not insignificant help from mates in the media and a referee here and a linesman there, the insufferable arrogance of the rags has prevailed and they have been proved right to have been confident that they would stay the course and City would blow it.
Apparently there are no excuses for this or any point in figuring anything out at all, it is a matter of a manager who is not good enough and just over half the team also not good enough, we just need to get rid and get replacements who GUARANTEE the title first time round.
Cant wait for next season now knowing we are going to win the league, wont bother watching the rest of this one as it is a dead duck. I wonder if I should get the CL champions tattoo done too. Nah, best wait to see if we get Pep first.
