How is it incompetence? We lost a major target because we stuck to our policy. For the second year in a row yes. Each time, we lost out to the Champions of Europe. We don't know we faffed about 12 months ago either, maybe the player then had a sniff that Barca were interested and held out for the dream move to the European champions rather than (at the time) the English FA Cup winners? We have no idea whatsoever that there was any incompetence. And was Cook was still at the club then so wouldn't that have been his fault rather than Marwood's? My instinct is to not like Marwood but we have no evidence whatsoever to say he isn't doing his job well.

It also shouldn't be forgotton that both Nasri & Yaya Toure's agents tried exactly the same game as Hazard's & both of those deals were put on hold until either the player sorted it or we were ready to walk away. In those cases, the players wanted to play for us so they sorted it out & signed & Marwood therefore got the exact result the chairman wanted. Hazard preferred to let his agent sell him to Chelsea.
That's life. No point in sulking about it & trying to create scapegoats, it's our policy.
It's also our policy not to spend fortunes on 29 year old players. You can be pretty sure Khaldoon isn't over the moon about the idea of spending £20 odd million plus £250k pw on Van Persie & will want the cheapest deal possible & about 3 strikers sold, if he's to sanction it. Mancini is moaning at Marwood, hoping Khaldoon will let him sign an 8th striker, whilst refusing to let go of the only one we've had a decent offer for (Balotelli). He's therefore chosen Balotelli ahead of RVP & I agree with him.

And, one thing that has to be noted on the Hazard deal was that we were in for him prior to the CL final. Winning the CL most certainly had an impact on Chelsea's bid, not just in terms of prestige but in monetary terms as well.

I still think he's a tit for making that decision though, & that it could spoil his career.

I don't know mate, Chelsea are amassing a very decent squad for future campaigns. Whether they can bring it all together is another matter and it does seem that RA has now got the [strike]puppet[/strike] front man that he wants in De Matteo. Hazard is part of that now and I'm not sure if his ego will be able to take the beating if things go wrong, that's why I wasn't that keen when we were in for him.
One thing's for sure, it's added quality to the league and may make this season an even better spectacle than last (apart from the ending of course, nothing will ever come close).

Once more I'm afraid you are at crossed purposes with the main gripe that both myself and DM have with Marwood and this transfer window.
Neither of us I don't think really believes that we should just run full steam ahead and willfully disregard the potential FFP consequences (although I am sceptical as to if/how the teeth of those rules will be imposed in the face of the spending pattern and dubious economics of Chelsea and PSG...I just don't think UEFA have the balls to play a hard line) BUT what does exorcise me is the fucking amateur hour handling of pursuits of players in whom we are genuinely interested.
You can give us all the "you don't really know what Marwood does/doesn't do" lines you want but fact of the matter is that I do corporate transactions for a living and, with the greatest respect, I think I have a pretty good idea what Marwood will be doing/meant to be doing as Khaldoon doesn't have the time/capacity to do it and Mancini doesn't have the authority to do it. And Marwood is simply not performing. Full stop. He patently obviously cannot close for the life of him....when we are being dragged through the papers by Liverpool wanting 20 then 22 then 25 million for Agger and De Rossi for 100m you know full well that we ha ve engaged, we've made our interest clear and then fucked about so they run the flag up the mast and all of a sudden we have the choice of being taken for mugs or walking away from a target we really are interested in. It is shambolic.
I agree we need to trim the squad, I agree that we needed to stop being taken for a ride/raped by agents, clubs and players but fact of the matter is that we need new players...not replacements necessarily but absolutely 100% certainly reinforcements are required.
Mancini I do not think is throwing his toys out of the pram because we didn't land Hazard or that we are going to miss out on RvP but because of the fact that the whole summer has passed and not one single player he asked for (and I think we all know that he will have discussed this before signing his new deal and received "assurances") has arrived in remotely enough time for him to have them integrated and ready.

Thank fuck someone can express some simple, basic concepts like business acumen and competition and negotiation. Those are the things I don't see happening effectively.
Sometimes I think most on this forum only ever have to try and negotiate for sex and we know how those negotiations end up for any of us even when we are at our best. Vegas offers better odds.
And for the record I'm not bothered by not landing hazard or rvp. In fact, I'm quite happy to have neither. we need a dash of spice. Some fresh bread. And our wine glass filled up. And you know what, we forgot to order something green. Bring us something green please, your choice. And we need to save room for dessert. Don't forget dessert.
Cheers
