A depressed mind can do funny things to a person i suppose. Shame, no-one is a winner in a suicide. His family, the train driver & the emergency services all suffer after a tragedy like this.
exactly mate. one of my close mates dad killed himself two months ago. a year after suffering a heart attack which led to depression. he left behind a wife and 3 lads. you just dont know what his happening in their heads.
RIP enke.

We all know someone who had to go through the very thing, what a selfish thing to do. I feel for his family but he has very little sympathy from me for this.
I agree with both of you. bit of a twat in my eyes leaving his wife and adopted child behind :(

I've heard about the tactic of parking a bus in front of the goals but parking your car in front of a train?

he was treated for depressions after that awful experience at Fenerbahce six years ago. The disease returned several times. He didn´t made it public, because he was afraid of losing his career and his adopted child, his wife told today. His doctors wanted him to go to a hospital for treatment, but he refused and commited suicide instead.

Unfortunately the way your mind works when suffering from depression is so askew from what we know as normal that this may well have been seen by him as his only real choice.

crikey....I didn't realise this had happened to him too
The following season, as Frank Rijkaard replaced Louis van Gaal as coach, Enke was loaned out to Turkish side Fenerbahçe – then managed by German coach Christoph Daum – as part of the deal that saw Rüştü Reçber move to the Spanish club. However, his career continued to stall as he managed to play just a solitary game there, a traumatic 0–3 defeat to Istanbulspor on 10 August 2003. His own fans pelted him with firelighters and bottles during the game, blaming him for this bitter defeat. These scenes caused Enke to immediately quit the club and his planned one-year loan and return to Spain.

If he was ill enough to think the only course of action open to him was to end his life then he was obviously too ill to make an informed choice about the method - I am equally sorry for everyone involved in the incident.

People willing to commit suicide are usually very sick and clearly not capable of thinking in a selfless fashion. It's easy to criticize because on the surface it's selfish, and hurtful. I would imagine that the pain they feel inside somehow overshadows everything else. I lost a friend to suicide 2 years ago this Thanksgiving, and while i do think he's a fucking prick for taking his own life i also often wonder what i could have done. I wish i could have understood, and really heard something that made me engage him...those thoughts can consume you because many times people do an okay job of hiding the extremity of their pain or strife. Sad, sad stuff...I just wish i could have found a way to make a difference because he was just a really really fantastic and funny guy the likes of which you rarely meet. And then ...poof. Dead by his own hand.
RIP Mr. German Keeper...i hope you shall arrive home soon.

Some great posts in this thread (and similar OT threads we've had in recent memory). These occasions remind me how lucky we are to have this forum and some of the members we have...it's a cut above any other sporting site I have ever seen.
We should work together to maintain the natural "level" of this place.
That all being said I find this story increasingly sad. I was thinking earlier that I have not (yet) lost a friend prematurely. I can't imagine the feelings involved. We should all cherish our nearest and dearest....more than we do. Every day like it might be the last and all that

Absolute horrendous news and whenever I hear something like this it takes me back to a friend who did the same thing. He showed no real signs on the outside that anything was wrong, however on the inside it was a different matter and it was only after his death that his family talked about the turmoil that he was really in.
How bad must it have been for him in those dark corners on his own and for his family who lived through it on a daily basis. Now his family have to pick up again after losing the man that they had tried so hard to look after. I feel for all concerned.

So very very sad and my condolenses to his family, also thoughts to the train driver and others involved in this.
As people have already said, depression is such a complicated illness - to have done this the poor guy must have been in a living hell - Money and talent are no safeguard against this kind of thing but perhaps just help to hide it more ...
God Bless - RIP

he must of been going through hell to do something as dramatic as he did ,thoughts go to his family but surely he could of found help, how can you do something like that and leave a woman and child who love you behind
the train driver will have to live with it the rest of his life as well ,having worked on the trains here in france i know of two who after "killing" someone never drove a train again it affected them that much

Didn't piccs go through the same thing? He hasn't been around much recently but I am sure this story would bring it all back for him.

Depression is something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, not even Taggart. This guy must have been so consumed by it to do this, that's why I'd be reluctant to blame him for it. Yes, he's ruined more lives than his own but that won't have been his motivation. I had a close relative try to take her own life recently, thankfully doctors were able to intervene but now, a few months on, describing how it feels she said you could be sitting in front of the TV and see your lotto numbers come up- it would mean fuck all. You're consumed constantly by thoughts of death and death only, you think it's the only way out and everything in the world, people, friends, family, money, is immaterial. Scary stuff.
RIP Robert Enke, far too young.

It's a shame, but this shit happens day in day out.
"Like all bullies, they've just found out that there is a much bigger guy in town, someone who is richer and more powerful than their worst nightmare. And this smiling Arabic assassin is intent on stealing all the treasures they've nicked off everyone else, and pulverising them into commercial and footballing oblivion as he does so."
