Do you feel uncomfortable?

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

I know what you mean. When we were shite, even 3rd tier shite, I'd happily admit to being a City fan, usually followed by me making a self-deprecating remark. In some ways, being a City fan was stereotypically British - the underdog, a bit of a laughing stock, but generally loved, not offensive to anyone.

Now if I tell someone I'm a City fan, I wait with baited breath for the volley of abuse and I'm on the defensive as soon as I mention who I support. To stereotype for another minute, I imagine if I was American or Australian, I'd be loving it, as they celebrate success, whereas in Britain it still seems to be frowned on, whether it be in sport or business.

I also use to laugh at rags on radio phone ins who always used to start with 'I'm a rag twat and have been supporting them for 25 years'. Now I find I'm doing it, justifying that I'm not a glory hunter by mentioning standing away at Chester in the 1st round of the FA Cup.

At the moment, there are times when I almost wish for the quiet life of lower league anonymity and pity, but then I slap myself, remember that the roller coaster is currently on the way up and look forward to the season ahead.

They often say that you can't enjoy the good times if you haven't known bad, well as City fans, we can't look back fondly at the bad times without getting some good, so let's start with a really good year this year. And for me, that start's with a Carling Cup win, so we can tear down that feckin banner and knock that lot of their perch.

nothin I can do about any of it so why should I have any feelings about it and more importantly if I did have any feelings would it make any difference?

If I was the Sheikh then ok it might be a different story but then it would be a different story altogether. The nice thing is I can say I have been a City fan for longer than most of the players have been alive, I went to Wembley in 81 and I sat in my car freezing cold and soaked to the core listening to us beating Gillingham stony broke and in tears as my emotions went from desperation and humiliation to uncontrolable joy and laughter as we escaped the third tier of English football by the skin of our teeth. Being a City fan has its crosses to bear. Success is the only one I have yet to suffer. When I do nobody's petty jealousy will take that away from me.

It is my turn. Fuck em.

Not at all but I think we have a long long way to go before we are the most hated club in the Britain.

Getting a bit bored with everyone hates us, sensitive attitude shown on here. Stop worrying what other people are saying on other clubs message boards. Stop highlighting United fans post as it seems we are a little obsessed with them. Stop crying when a journalist who is just trying to fill a few inches when nothing else is happening in the transfer market does not write gushing praise about us and just enjoy what CITY are doing.

Not at all, siege mentality is what's needed and that's exactly what we're gonna get both from us fans and the club itself

You know, like IBH I've also had a look at other forums and he's bang on - other clubs think we're all a set of cunts.

Funnily enough the one club's fans that is more favourable to us than any other is Chelsea. Probably because they've been in a similar situation to us.

I was reading a thread on one Chelsea forum asking for other posters predictions as to how they think the upcoming season will pan out and a lot of them had City down as second.
"Like all bullies, they've just found out that there is a much bigger guy in town, someone who is richer and more powerful than their worst nightmare. And this smiling Arabic assassin is intent on stealing all the treasures they've nicked off everyone else, and pulverising them into commercial and footballing oblivion as he does so."

I'm with you froggy chap. After all these bloody years.................

And the whole world hasn't stopped talking about us for months and months. Abroad we are 'one of the greats', 4 years ago no fucker had ever heard of us unless they were old enough to have some vague memory of 1970 Cup-winners cup.

I do hope Mubarak and Cook have their 'business plan' right, but only for the sake of this Platini nonsense, not for the club because they'll just add more capital.

Marvellous! Bollox to the lot of them.

To be honest, lots may be said on message boards but there seems to be very little coming when face-to-face. Was with a Bolton and Arsenal fan last night and the talk about football matters was more along the lines of 'I wish we had the money' or 'I wish we'd start buying'.

I find the very few fans I can have a proper chat about football with are Chelsea fans.I have alot of mates that are good and proper Chelsea fans, so this is prob why I can have a good natter with them about footy, although I have had silly comments from some Chelsea fans, you couldnt make it up after them being in a simular position to us. When I chat with other fans, I usualy get bitchy comments and it ends up in the same old arguement about us ruinin football blah blah blah. I also feel like Im rubbin it in chattin with other fans, when Im not!! Maybe they think the same and it gets to them??.

Man Utd fans seem to be the worst, they really cant handle it.Where as, Liverpool fans seem to have accepted what is goin on and keep it shut to avoid further embarressment..

At the end of the day, every one of these fans would love to be in our position, so I dont know how they can moan.. They just cant handle it.

Fans of other clubs are probably pissed off about hearing and reading about "moneybags" City all the time, but personally, I don't give a fuck what any fan of any other club thinks about City.

well said, I don't give a fuck either way. Years back when we were everyone's second club people were posting all the stories and talk from other supporters of other clubs saying how they wanted us to do well and I always said that I don't give a fuck about their sympathy because it means we are shite. No one likes successful club. Simple as.

Also, as mentioned on this topic, we won on 'owners lottery'. If it were someone else, say Newcastle or Everton or someone like that I would've been little envious but also said fair enough, they got lucky.

Probably the most hilarious bit was reading article while back from Fulham supporter moaning about us. That was bit too steep. We have 8th most points in history of English top flight. We didn't just came out of nowhere with our owners. Fulham on the other hand are as bad if not much worse case of sugardaddy doing his thing. As a club Fulham are about naturally about bottom half of Championship/1st division calibre. At least as far as size of the club goes we are solid upper midtable club. So in best case we are few positions above our natural level whereas they are few DIVISIONS above their level.

They can all go fuck themselves but I'd love to hear some sensible stuff from supporters of other clubs every now and then. Last season they were treating us as their most hated opposition in both Villa and Everton boards. Laughable all things considered.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

people hate winners, its a fact of life. in darts people hate Taylor, in snooker it was Davis, in football it was Liverpool, than the scum, than Chelsea and now us. Take it as a compliment, people see us as the new top dogs which is strange as we've won nothing but everyone knows its inevitable.

Apart from kn*bhead English football fans, - experts I meet ! You know, when you can't get over for a game, so you go to the pub and are surrounded by United fans from anywhere but Mancy, or Scouse 1 fans and certainly Arsenal fans. Other clubs fans have seen City as a godsend for being in the position to break up the cartel ( as oppose to wanting to be a part of it). Believe me, fans of other clubs outside the Cartel genuinely think that the commentators, the press and experts are also kn*bheads.

Foreigners I meet, Swiss, Germans, Italians , whatever, are genuinely interested in hearing how it works and how City can take advantage of the financial clout we have. They are surprised when they hear me say that whilst i find it an absolutely brilliant situation to be in, that it wouldn't worry me one iota if it all stopped tomorrow. As I explain to them, for City fans ,we don't stop being fans just because we've fallen on hard times and that more importantly, money isn't the be all and end all for us.

We recognise that we can't always win all the games all the time, nor do we expect to. That it's most important for City fans to see the team trying to win, trying to entertain the crowd with attractive football. We know we will lose games and we are happy to admit on the day that the best team won. Then I point out to them that you very rarely get a United fan admit that the best team won on the day , rather that United didn't play well. that it's a strength in the City fan to be able to accept that we weren't good enough and we need to improve, compared to the weakness in the united fan for denying to himself that his team were outplayed. A very rare animal indeed. I can think of only one person here in switzerland, a genuine united fan from stockport who really can see both sides of the coin. In the streets where i grew up in Hulme in the sixties and seventies, the reds were the former rather than the latter stockport fan too.

Sure we have and have had some dubious characters as City fans, but more often than not they get sorted out in the stadium and their hearts are usually in the right place.

Anyway, in short , I married into City at a young age ( five) and it's till death do us part for me. win or lose , rich or poor.

There are four stages:
1. Where everyone adopts you as a second team, with pity and indifference.
2. When you come upon significant investment, treated with jealousy, hatred and ridicule.
3. When you win a trophy, treated with ridicule and sentiments of 'you bought the league'. (It will get more intense!!!)
4. When you have won a few trophies over a few years, referred continually as a big club everyone would like to play for and the hatred moves on to the next to make a real push for the Champions League places.

What happened with Chelsea will happen with us.
Over here in North America, apart from committed fans of rival teams, the reaction to City has not been very negative at all. We have improved the quality of the Premier League and made it more watchable for neutrals. That should be worth a few brownie points!!! Fan bases often build on the basis of who the strongest clubs were when people start watching if they are not part of a family committed to any particular club or from people who tire of 'their' club. Our fan base will only get larger...just hopefully not with people who have a red rag hidden in the back of the closest from their last favourite team...
