Can't believe it actually needs to be debated

Agree, Dunne - one of the most overrated players we have ever had.

Can't agree with that. On the whole a legend, and I think more under than overrated because of the shit he was playing alongside a lot of the time (Distin not included).
Saying that, comparing him with Kompany is a bit ridiculous, like comparing a good middleweight against a heavyweight championship contender.

Vince every time.

He's tall, quick-ish, rock solid and dependable. What more do you need?

All things considered, I think Richard Dunne is a better all-round centre-half than Vincent Kompany. It's all well and good saying Dunney had "one or two" good seasons for us, but he was a rock for us for years as defensive partners came and went. He was also immense for Villa last year.

That said, the question is a bit ambiguous. VK is a more valuable squad member now due to his age, versatility and market value.

No contest, Kompany is top-4 quality. Dunnie isn't, he was brilliant for us when we were mid-table side but I think it's fair to say he proved he isn't top-4 material. Would be ideal back-up though.

I disagree with that. Just because they didn't achieve what Lee bell and sumerbee did doesn't mean they are not legends.

Mate, you can agree or disagree with what you like.

We obviously have different benchmarks for what constitutes a legend

Why do we have to pick? I'd rather have both, they're both better than Toure and Lescott.

Dunne was one half of the best central defensive partnership this club has had for decades. Note, I always felt Distin was the stronger player which wasnt popular back in the days.

Kompany is more talented than Dunne and has shown signs of developing into a far better player.

I think its obvious that if you had to choose one or the other right now to play a game tonight, everyone would plump for Vince.

Some comments re Dunne in this thread are very dissappointing. Memories only go back to the Sven era so it seems. The 3 seasons before that one, Dunne was one of the clubs best and most loyal players. He deserves respect.

At 23, Vincent Kompany will be the mainstay of a title challenging, trophy winning, champions league playing side.
At 23, Richard Dunne was getting pissed in Cheadle whilst playing right back for a championship side.

and Kompany will get better. I loved Dunney, he was a typical CIty player, a decent defender with the ability to fuck up, make us rip our hair out and then laugh about it hours later but Kompany is in another class.

You have to be a certain age to know I suspect.

Think this deserves more recognition than it's got so far.

I'm delighted I don't have to watch Dunne anymore. He admittedly had one tremendous season where he was one of the best around, then peple got blinkers on & imagined he was still doing it when he wasn't. I've seen plenty of far worse defenders but I've never seen one of his size/strength/pace who could suddenly go to fucking pieces & repeatedly fuck up until he gave away a crucial goal. It was always in a crucial or knockout game. If he got away with one howler he'd keep doing it until they scored or he'd get sent off or score it himself. He was exactly the same for Villa last season; great until they needed him most then suddenly, for no apparent reason; legs of jelly & arse of shit. He'll do it again, in a crucial game this season, just watch. And then the words "so out of character.." & "the usually immaculate.." etc etc.

Not convinced by Kompany yet but his performance at Spurs was as good as anything Dunne ever produced & he's a miles better footballer. We'll soon find out if he's going to continue at that standard, but if he does we have a proper centre back.

You saved me writting something similar.

Kinky used to be my favourite player then bernabia use to be my favourite player then richard dunne. When Kompany came in his attitude and fiesty attitude on the pitch with a touch of class became my favourite player. I have a feeling Yaya may become my favourite player in the future.

Im a little worried we dont have a kinky or bernabia but for me Kompany was an upgrade on richard dunne but Kompany has skills and can play football. Dunne was a rock at the back and would put himself on the line, kompany is that and a alot more.

I often wonder how dunnie would have done with Mancini.

This isn't Hughes hate, but I do wonder how he managed to turn so many rated defenders into hat figures.

Under Sven, micah and dunnie were immense. Hughes comes in with his own staff and they're both shit. Kolo is another that turned to shit under that regime.

Maybe we had shit defensive coaches? I mean dunnie was great for the two previous managers.

That said Vinnie for me is gonna be world class
Tracking back is overrated.
