100% agree I rate Barry very highly and he is incredibly underrated. I get the impression Mancini thinks the same as he's very rarely benches as opposed to Milner, de Jong, Vieira etc he starts if he's fit and the fact that Mancini has refuses to plag him at left back when he could easily do a job seems to me like he thinks he would lose too much in midfield to do this. You cant tell me Lescott is a better left back than Barry surely???

Ted Hughes wrote:I think we need to remember that Milner is a new signing. To his credit, he gives the impression on the pitch that he's been around for years but he's still finding his feet & it may be next season before we see him 100% settled, as there are several other players in the team doing the same & more to come.

As for Barry, it would be great to have a better, faster, more gifted player who can do his job, but what shouldn't be underestimated is the number of crucial positions he takes up & his reading of the game. He stopped what would have been a certain goal yesterday for instance. Any true replacement would have to be very intelligent & willing to do a lot of covering for other people.

According to the TV commentator Milner had been ill most of the week so that could explain his poor performance yesterday.

Houllier on Stephen Ireland. "He doesn't defend, he doesn't run back, he loses too many balls in crucial areas. He needs to work harder."

Gérard Houllier tells Stephen Ireland he must work harder

• Aston Villa midfielder is dropped for Birmingham derby
• 'Skill is one thing but you need to compete,' says manager

Gérard Houllier has delivered a damning assessment of Stephen Ireland's contribution since joining Aston Villa from Manchester City in the summer. The Villa manager accused Ireland, who was dropped for the 0-0 draw against Birmingham City today and remained on the substitutes' bench throughout, of not working hard enough for the team, neglecting his defensive duties and squandering possession too readily.

Ireland, an £8m makeweight in the transfer that took James Milner to Eastlands in August, has yet to score for Villa in six appearances and has struggled for form.

Houllier said last week that Ireland looked "lost" against Sunderland and Burnley, in Villa's previous two matches, but the Frenchman went a step further with his criticism today, when he claimed the 24-year-old was not worthy of a place in the team because of the shortcomings in his game that he needs to address.

"He needs to work harder," Houllier said, explaining his decision to omit Ireland. "He played against Chelsea and did well, he played against Sunderland and it was not good enough to me, as simple as that. He needs to work harder. The skill is one thing but you need to compete.

"It's a difficult period for him. We support him. We back him. He comes to a new club and there's a change of manager inbetween. We will be 100% for him.

"We know he is a good player. But I don't want to have players who you say: 'He's a good player but ...'

"If you say: 'He's a good player but he doesn't defend, but he doesn't run back, but he loses too many balls in crucial areas', that's difficult. He needs to get rid of these 'buts' and be a good player. We put him in at Sunderland behind the striker and he needs to get hold of the ball and play," Houllier said.

Ireland joined Villa after Martin O'Neill resigned as manager but before Houllier took over more than a month later. When he signed a four-year contract as one of the highest-paid players at the club he fiercely rejected suggestions from the Manchester City manager, Roberto Mancini, that he had an attitude problem and needed to "change his head".

The midfielder made great play of how in training he "worked the hardest of anyone" in City's squad and was "practically always the best player".

Ireland made his Villa debut in the 6-0 defeat by Newcastle in August and has been substituted in each of the other four matches he has started.

Although Ireland's performances have been disappointing, there is no suggestion Houllier is considering moving the player on. The Villa manager stated the importance of increasing rather than reducing his squad when the transfer window opens in January after the paucity of his options were highlighted against Birmingham. "If some players get injured, we will be in real trouble because we are lacking in numbers in some areas," he said.

Exactly.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Looks like Ireland has one foot out the door at Villa. Asked for a transfer and won't even be in the squad that travels to Wigan tomorrow.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/footbal ... 301248.stm

Dunne's lost his place in the starting lineup as well. Hard times for two former City stalwarts.

Houllier's been shit as well though, applauding the Kop, discussing the bright side of being tonked at Anfield, etc. Hang in there Dunney.

Ireland will forever be a one-season wonder. He'll be playing in the Championship in a year or so.

It's a real shame as in that one season he was sensational. It's just a shame that he was shit in every other year he was with us. Looks like we got rid of him at the right time.

He appears to have the skill, but not the right mentality nor the ability to fit into a team.

Ireland is like a child he needs to be loved, nurtured and told he is amazing. If he finds a manager who is willing to do all of those things he will get back to what we seen (or close enough)

Didn't he go to shite under the same manager he was allegedly brilliant though? I say allegedly because I personally think he just shone a bit among a sea of mediocrity.

Ireland has the "ability" to be one of the best midfielders in the premiership, if someone can unlock what he has and get the best out of him, they will have one hell of a player. Standing there watching some of Irelands superb passes and vision was simply sublime at times and some of his runs off the ball were fucking brilliant but the people around him didnt read things in the same vein.

I will never be on his back, i thought he was a good lad and I enjoyed the superman year.

I would not be surprised to see Ireland at Fulham in the near future. Les has a knack of getting a little extra out of certain players.
Take Bellamy for instance. Who would have guessed he'd be anything like the player he was for us?

An in-form Ireland could be just what Fulham (and Les) need right now.

How Dunne has gone from legend to liability

Richard Dunne proved himself to be a bargain £5million signing for Aston Villa last season but the same player is unrecognisable this term.

Republic of Ireland stopper Dunne, 31, arrived at Villa Park last August from Man City and was a major reason the club finished sixth and got to Wembley twice.

The strapping centre-back's displays were acclaimed by his peers as he was voted into the Premier League PFA team of the year.

And he was also named players' player of the year at Villa Park by his team-mate

Dunne became a leader at Villa on and off the pitch as captain Stiliyan Petrov has a more quiet approach.

But Dunne led by example on the field, scoring three goals - including one at home to Man City - as he took over the mantle of being the side's defensive colossus from Martin Laursen.

Dunne's acrimonious exit from Eastlands, where he was forced out by then manager Mark Hughes, only served to fire him up to succeed at Villa last season.

Yet just months later, the Dubliner barely looks the same player he was last term.

And the remaining two-and-a-half years on his £53,000-a-week deal, now look a millstone around Villa's neck as they seek to cut their £70m annual wage bill.

Because, putting it bluntly, Dunne has been appalling this season.

I have it on good authority he struggled badly in pre-season with his fitness and sadly, although it sounds cruel, he now looks out of shape for a Premier League professional.

It has reflected in his performances on the pitch where I don't recall him having one good game this season.

He was shocking at Newcastle in just the second game of the Premier League campaign where caretaker Kevin MacDonald's side lost 6-0 to effectively end his hopes of succeeding O'Neill.

And his performances under successor Gerard Houllier have been similarly dire.

Dunne has gone from scoring at set-pieces last season to rekindling his penchant for own goals by putting through the visitors' net at Sunderland.

I was there at Birmingham where Dunne also gave away a clumsy penalty as Villa lost in the Carling Cup quarter-finals to their arch-rivals.

And despite Dunne admirably facing the press afterwards to urge improvement from his colleagues, he then turned in one of his worst performances of the season at Liverpool as Houllier's men lost 3-0.

Dunne hit rock bottom though when he followed up his performance going AWOL at Anfield with a stormy training ground row with Villa coach Gary McAllister - confirmed by MirrorFootball.

And his recent displays and behaviour at the club have been enough to get people speculating what on earth is going on in the man's life?

One mitigating circumstance could be Dunne has had a knee injury this season.

He may also quite possibly have personal problems as my sources say he has not looked himself for sometime this season.

Yet nevertheless, Dunne has been picked ahead of Carlos Cuellar, Ciaran Clark and Curtis Davies (remember him?) for virtually all of the season so he must be considered fit enough mentally and physically to start.

But, regardless of the training ground bust-up, Dunne deserved to be benched against West Brom as Houllier opted to give the captaincy to Ashley Young instead and recalled Cuellar.

It is going to be fascinating to see how Dunne responds to the axe.

Will he revive the spirit and determination which inspired him last season or will he throw the towel in and laze around waiting for a move?

I have nothing against the man but one of the reasons Villa find themselves in their current rut is their senior players such as Dunne have under-performed badly.

Hopefully Dunne will bounce back positively to being dropped as Villa surely need him as they strive to haul themselves up the table.

Villa are short of natural leaders, which is why Houllier quickly brought in Nigel Reo-Coker from the cold after taking over.

Dunne can still do the job for Villa but he must improve his fitness immediately and knuckle down under Houllier's new no-nonsense regime.

Sort of agree with that but only when he's really on his game. If he drops even 10% he's a bit of a liability imo.

It's easy to get into the mentality of 'he's shit' if he plays a few games below par though, as his shitness stands out like a sore thumb because he gets himself into important positions. It's easy to see him miss a tackle but it's not always easy to appreciate that he's the only player who would have read the game well enough to be attempting that tackle in the 1st place. The number of cock ups by other players that he quietly covers up is outstanding.

Imo he's been mostly excellent this season but ideally, you want a player who does the same job but is quicker & scores some crucial goals. Not sure such a player exists though.

Re Dunne & Ireland; both are very very fortunate to be professional footballers. Pair of absolute losers.

Stephen Ireland is suing Manchester City for £1.5million after the club withheld that sum from him after he broke a confidentiality agreement.

City agreed to give the midfielder the pay-off as compensation when he took a pay cut to join Aston Villa but the payment was dependant upon Ireland accepting the confidentiality agreement that would prevent him publicly criticising City.

Just a few days after he joined Villa, Ireland conducted an interview in which he accused City’s big names of being “money obsessed” and said that Roberto Mancini was unable to build relationships with his players.

Article continues below...

Ireland also said that James Milner, who moved in the opposite direction as part of the same deal, would soon discover he had made a mistake by moving to City.

City sent their former player a letter warning him that he was in breach of their agreement but he continued to slate the club publicly and City blocked the payment.

The Mirror quote a City insider as saying: "A confidentiality agreement was agreed when Stephen joined Aston Villa.

"A warning was sent when he subsequently broke that agreement, so when he did it again the payment was withheld."

Now Ireland is preparing to go to court to sue his former club for the money.

Ireland was axed from Gerard Houllier's squad after just twelve appearances for his new club and is currently weighing up his options for January.

Celtic are favourites to land Ireland on a six-month loan deal and there is interest from both Liverpool and Everton according to reports.

Ireland was reportedly on £72,000-a-week at City and accepted a £10,000-a-week drop in salary.

If that story is true Ireland has just dropped in my estimation. I was quite upset with him for not keeping his gob shut after the transfer. Trying to milk the club for cash now, makes it even worse.
