*** THE NEW MANCITYFANS TSHIRT IS ON SALE ***

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

The official answer is:

"1884 The first known ‘City shirt’ is created – in black, with a Maltese-style cross. Some say this is because of the club’s strong links with Freemasonry in the 1880s, others believe the white cross proves the link with St Mark’s was still strong"

From the OS history.

So basically no-one has a bloody clue.

St Marks was of course a Church of England place

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Go ... Mark.shtml

So why an obviously catholic symbol would link to this who knows? 'Maltese-style' means nothing as I said above because that just means it is derived from the crusader orders. Freemasons is therefore obviously a possibility, and they do use Templar symbols like this:

Most likely some bloke liked the look of that symbol - must be difficult to think of a badge from scratch in a hurry - , or got a job lot of those badges from a local trader left over.

As things are this site will vanish next December unless we raise the money to pay for the hosting. We only get a couple of quid for each shirt sold so need to shift quite a lot to raise enough money.

Can I suggest that people add a link to the online shop ( [urlnp=http://www.iffyton.co.uk/index.php/football-tshirts/mancity-gorton-1393.html]HERE[/urlnp]) to their facebook and Twitter pages too please? Every little bit helps.

Cheers

P.S. Partick, thanks again for sorting this out mate. If and when we meet again I will happily buy you half a shandy.

Gorton Monastery was Roman catholic
St Marks was to the best of my knowledge...(without checking) Church of England. When it was demolished, it was intergrated into the St Benedict's Parish on Bennett Street...and latterly merged with the Emmanuelle Church in Gorton.
As far as i have read, there are several theories about the Maltese cross and City...from Christianity to Masonry. I don't think we have a definitive answer.
It may have been a job lot.

It might be worth researching the neath RLF roots as I think it's them who still use the identical emblem as their crest.

I like this idea the best.

Considering the poverty around the area this is actually not a bad suggestion,(even though its a joke).

I don't fancy the shirt, but I've no problem putting in a few quid to keep the site going.

Only half a joke mate. I know the way organisations function at my advanced age.

Btw john68 - the monastery was catholic obviously but the cross of the Franciscans (looked up yesterday), which this was, looked nothing like the one in question, being of the longer variety. Dont like the idea of masons either because it's supposedly secret, rather than advertising links or sponsorship of a football team.

Unless as I say one of the 'chaps' could get his hands on some left-over badges!!

John,
Nobody seems certain why our founders used the Maltese cross as the original crest. It may have simply been a design someone liked, without needing to have any other significant meaning. Who knows mate.
Our Masonic link seems pretty much confirmed, from the stories of an ex president, (Dr Rose). Although it is believed that we used blue (both cambridge Blue and Royal blue) at various times, even (it is believed) scarlet and black stripes, before we settled definively on Cambridge Blue as a club colour. The reason given for our choice of the lighter blue is now considered to be because of the links of our leader at the time, with the Masonic order.
Apparently, those links continued for many years and we know that certain major personalities at City, as late as the 70s had strong Masonic links.
Not being a Mason, I am not making any judgement on this, just relaying the info mate.

Good stuff John.

I think we should go back to our traditional badge, just to give everyone else and the media something else to moan about!
