Thought Weaver was also worth at least a call up to the squad, cannot believe Richard Wright was capped over him.

Out of the players I've seen, the glaringly obvious one is definitely Alan Oakes.

When you look at some of the centre backs, midfielders & fullbacks who've played for England over the last 20 years or so, Tommy Booth & Paul Power are bloody unlucky never to have had a sniff in more than one position.

If the question was to be asked about players who played but didn't play enough at international level, there would be scores of them.

Not really a suprise but Tony Book was one of the best fullbacks we have had.

IMHO opinion, big Neil WAS more than good enough to play for England - he was incomparably wonderful in an era when there was an abundance of fine (English) players; it's Alf Ramsay who was the dumb-head for not selecting him.

As for the great Alan Oakes, he was a veritable dreadnought of a player and should have had a boatload of International caps......not that I'm unduly biased in any way........

I don't think that's an outrageous shout. Is he really that much worse than Glen Johnson?

I don't think Brightwell was ever good enough to be selected in one position, but as a squad utility player due to his versatility he could have been beneficial. Lake was selected for the 1990 WC 40 don't forget.

Caps were so much harder to win up until a couple of decades ago.
Only a couple of subs allowed and all the games meant something none of these warm up games and matches against mickey mouse sides where the manager can have a look at fringe players.
There were a few "B Internationals" and FA XI matches for that but an international cap was very much only given to a select few.

No disrespect to Ned but if you had seen the likes of Oakesy play you would realise the gulf between the two.

On this Internationals theme, just to digress a little, one of the best England Managers we never had (well sort of) was Joe Mercer.

He took over in the 70s on a short term/caretaker basis and announced that his role was just to keep things ticking over and not change anything until a permanent selection could be made.

He then proceeded to completely revamp the way England played and, although he only had half a dozen games, or so, in charge, the National team started playing in the Mercer way with freedom and imagination (rather than the dull and staid Ramsay et al fashion). It was really good stuff to watch and successful too - just a pity the FA morons didn't try harder to get Joe to stay on permanently.

Best Manager we could have had and didn't.........

Like the original poster said, I'm not a huge fan of Ned's however, he's been pretty good this season, much better than Johnson. Zonal Marking had him in his English team of the season so far. (Whatever that's worth).

I know he got one ill-fated cap but David White should of had a bagful in his pomp.

Paul was a typical late developer.
A below par LM he worked hard and became a pretty good LB for us and fitted right into the style Everton had developed.
Industrious and intelligent all he lacked was that bit of magic that seperates class players from the nearly men like Paul.

Cracking goal to get us to Wembley in 81 though. I was standing right behind the goal in which he lashed the free kick.

He was City captain 400+ appearances took us to Wembley with the goal vs Ipswich and won the league with Everton. When he scored for Everton against City he refused to celebrate. Legend.
