Waffa Cup League Thingy

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

How football seems to have changed. Not omly that, how the way supporters view it has changed too.

There is almost as much talk on here these days about money, profit, income, expenditure, and debt, as there is about the game played on the field. In 1970, having won the League and FA Cup in the previous 12 months, City went to Vienna in the final of the Europesn Cup Winners Cup. We won, we celebrated. We'd won a European trophy...and we were as proud as fuck!!!

I don't suppose any of us considered how much City had earned from it. I don't suppose it even crossed our minds. We were too busy beiing happy at picking up another pot and considering ourselves as a major successful European Club. I still consider it to be the greatest success City have ever gained.

Now we look at the Europa League and think of the money it doesn't bring in and consider it beneath us.

As I said...How football seems to have changed....For the better?????

FWIW, Carragher is "desperate" to play in the Europa next year. (It sounds like he's given up hope on catching us for the CL.)

I don't think the money issue comes into it mate, especially with me. The whole problem with the competition is the format itself, having to start early and then being dragged through hoards of rounds (how many games did we have to play just to get to the last 16 with another 5 games to win it) and I think the club probably took the same view, especially considering our priorities. Then there's the monetary issue and with crowds down to less than half a stadium, due to the format, then it's no wonder people can't take it serious.

And what competition gives teams a second chance who have failed in their original competition, which then makes the cup even more ludicrous as these teams are far more advanced with money and player availability.

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy going to the matches as I can't help myself, but in truth the Europa League is a farce that no-one can take seriously. If it wasn't for the discounted tickets how many people would still go and watch it? There's a reason it's so cheap, and that's because the competition is, cheap.

This is my main gripe with the Europa League. Bullshit system.

It is a second rate competition though & that's not purely down to the money & it's been like that since the Champions League was introduced. Prem clubs who challenge or atleast are used to challenging for the title can't be expected to be content with a 5th place finish. That's what it is to those club, nothing but a disappointing 5th place & a fuckton of extra games in Eastern Europe.

I'm sure the likes of Doncaster & Scunthorpe are happy playing in the Championship, but bigger clubs dread it.
And asking winners of bottom tier leagues if they would rather have the trophy or promotion is kind of a non-question so 'filling the trophy cabinet' isn't much of a motivation.

Hi John,

That's interesting :- although I was euphoric about us winning a European pot, at that time I regarded it as (an albeit first rate) consolation for our failure(s), since the great 1967/68 season, to land another League title.

I'd still prefer a Premiership title above all else although, in the next few years if we were to win the Champions League, I might just have second thoughts......

Why is only 1 spot still open for England. I presume Birmingham get a spot as League Cup winners. Does Stoke have a guarenteed spot whether they win the FA Cup or end up as runners up ?

Mikhail,
I s'pose it was just my own opinion of the natural hierarchy of trophies at that time...
1...European Cup
2...Inter Cities Fairs Cup
3...European Cup Winners Cup
4...League Championship
5...FA Cup
6...League Cup
7...Charity Shield.
Maybe because they were Euro comps and qualification had to be earned I thought that Euro trophies were a better pot.

John, I'm rapidly approaching my dotage too, but I always remember the Fairs Cup as being the mickey mouse European competition, and the European Cup Winners Cup as being in second place
