City target can decide his own future
Suitors have hope in signing De Rossi

de rossi

AS Roma owner Thomas DiBenedetto has revealed that the Serie A outfit will not pressure Manchester City target Daniele DeRossi to stay at the club as the final decision will be made by the player himself.

De Rossi, 28, won the World Cup with Italy in 2006 but despite attracting interest from across the globe ever since, he has stayed committed to playing for the Giallorossi his entire career.

With his current contract set to expire next summer, though, City boss Roberto Mancini recently hinted at proposing a mutually beneficial transfer deal for both clubs before De Rossi signs an extension.

However, Mancini also acknowledged that De Rossi’s firm commitment to Roma will make it difficult to convince the player regarding a move to the Premier League.

“Daniele de Rossi would be absolutely perfect for this team and I rate him as one of the best midfielders in the world. But I also have the suspicion that he will stay in Rome his entire career, just like Francesco Totti has done,” Mancini stated last week.

DiBenedetto’s faith in letting the player make the final decision over his future also stems from the confidence that De Rossi will prefer staying in Rome over moving anywhere else.

“Daniele is Roman and 100 percent a Roma fan, a great player and one of real value to us. We hope that he will keep on playing for Roma until the end of his career, but the final decision is his,” DiBenedetto told Sky Sports.

De Rossi, who is currently training with the Azzuri squad ahead of their Euro 2012 qualifiers, has also been the subject of interest from Real Madrid but seeing how their midfield dominated Zaragoza in Sunday’s 6-0 win to open the season, it is unlikely that Jose Mourinho’s side will be aggressive in pursuing the Italian.

Ridiculous.

Every time Peter Parker goes on about a player we're linked with they tend to end up coming. For that reason alone I bet this has legs.

8 legs?

Either Mertesacher from Werder Bremen or Hangeland from Fulham.

Loan with the option to buy after the year for 6m euros...interesting if this paves the way for

I guess this pretty much slams the door on us signing him,
Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi has committed his future to the Giallorossi by signing a five-year contract extension.

The 28-year-old Italy international, whose previous deal was due to expire this summer, had been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Manchester City reportedly particularly keen to acquire his services.

However, Sunday's announcement - which comes after months of negotiations between the player and the American-owned club - looks set to end such speculation.

"We have reached an agreement with De Rossi for five years," Roma general director Franco Baldini said to Mediaset. "(On Monday) we will give the financial details of the deal.

"We are delighted to announce this agreement. It has been a difficult renewal because he (De Rossi) could have chosen other destinations. This has represented an added hurdle but he chose us and that is a good sign."

De Rossi has played all of his career for Roma and featured in Sunday's 4-0 triumph over Inter Milan after missing the last two Serie A games with a back injury.

I was in a strange situation with De Rossi, because as a Roma fan I would have been sad if he left, especially after all his assurances in the past that he wasn't going to leave, etc. but at the same time it seemed if he left he would have come to City so I would have been happy for having him at the Etihad, because I know him well as a player and know what he could have added to our midfield to make it even stronger than it already is; a midfield of Yaya, De Rossi and Barry would have bossed the league for years to come.

All in all, I guess I am glad he's staying in Rome; romantic reasons and all that stuff, you know! ;) But, the rumour here is that the deal has a clause in it that allows him to go for around 10M euro, it's not still clear how that can be activated but it seems a way for him to free himself if the new Roma project with Luis Enrique at the helm doesn't bring the expected results within a certain time period.

The fact that Mancini named him as a target means he is a city player next season. Looking forward to it.

Wouldn't put it past the sheikh of course, but right now I think this has the same chance of going through than Everton winning the title this season. He's just signed for another 5 seasons on a mighty salary, with no buyout clause in the deal, and he said today is the press conference, "Since the summer I always wanted to stay here, I was just after the right money, I wanted this wage and now I've got it so I'm here for the long term, being in Rome is what I need to play football at a certain level". If he goes in the summer after speaking this way, I'll be very, very surprised.

Quite strange to hear of any player speaking so candidly about money. I'm sure you're paraphrasing somewhat but I've never heard of any player talk about money - well not at the highest level - almost as if they're embarrassed to talk about the difference between, say 100k and 200k.. a huge difference of course but to almost everyone else, the initial figures were already absurd.

Refreshing in a way because we all know that's the reason behind these prolonged contact talks and leaked interest from other clubs - certainly didn't hear Rooney mention money, just how he'd suddenly bought into the clubs plans.

Shame, one player I really wanted us to sign.

Well I might have summed up what he said, but one passage of his press conference was literally like this: "Non so come dirlo, volevo questi soldi" which if you look it up translates as "I don't know how to say it, I wanted this money". So he did mention money quite openly. But after all, he had promised the fans that once the situation would be resolved, one way or the other, he would go and explain it clearly to them, so he did just that.

He also said he listened to a lot of people, including his agent, who were telling him to go where he could get wages that he defined "unthinkable" or something like that, but that in the end, his agent is not from Rome so he tried to do his job but no agent can say something his client doesn't think and the final decision was always going to be his own and no one else's.

Made me chuckle as I thought of Tevez and Kia.

Anyway if anyone is interested here's the link to the press conference, it's in Italian but I'm sure you could translate it with Google, or I'll do it later today, I'm in a bit of an hurry this morning:
