Douglas Higginbottom wrote:The thing about keepers is that when you watch highlights you usually get to see the best they have to offer. The brilliant saves and not the mistakes they make unless they lead directly to goals. It's that stuff that creates and leaves the positive impression about the player.

When you see all the game and especially when you see a keeper week in week out you see performances ,warts and all and you get the true picture. We have the best keeper in the country and he is still very young. We know how good he can be,the fantastic saves he can make but ,even knowing that or maybe because we know that there is a tendancy to start to focus on the negatives. We start picking at anything and even start to think that he isnt the best around.

I wouldnt swap him for any keeper anywhere and I also don't think I would want to bring another keeper in as his understudy.I don't know if Panti is a top notch keeper yet and hopefully we won't need to find out in the near future either.

Just to pick on 3 other keepers who we know are excellent. Shay Given,it was decided he was number 2 to Joe.In recent times imo we have seen why as goals scored against him are as much down to him staying on his line for crosses he should be taking as anything else.Great shot stopper for sure but very weak on crosses.

Czec, another fine keeper but only last week he was heavily criticised after the Arse game for letting goals in at his near post.I think we have seen the best of Czec. And Friedl, another top top keeper who is past his best.Still good as we sort of saw yesterday but in that game against Fulham he was parrying shots all through the game ,just as Joe is being heavily criticised for.He got away with it in that one but might not in the next.

Joe all day long for me.

You talk as though you're the only one of us who watches a lot of live football! I watch as many games as I can every week and I bet that a lot if not most of the posters on this board do too.

Bollocks. He made a number of top notch saves.

Yes and he made a couple of easy errors, all starts somewhere.

I rated Cudicini very highly at Chelsea and could never understand why they were so eager to replace him with Cech - until i saw how good Cech could be. He's 38 now and im disappointed he's sat the last years of his career out on the bench.

But yeah... Joe Hart is the one, fantastic keeper and one for City and England for a very long time i hope. I think all keepers have their weaknesses, and theyre often highlighted a lot more than players, but i think Joe's all round game is fantastic. We've talked about the parrying into danger but i dont think its going to take much work to resolve this, especially now it's been publicly highlighted. 600k we paid for him didnt we? He's worth a little bit more than that now i reckon

Despite his gaff on the weekend I think Begovic is very good too and will go on to be top drawer. I don't rate Arsenal's keeper though. He can be outstanding on his day but he's too inconsistent. If they had of bought Schwarzer last season there would be no crisis.

Krul has made some dodgy decisions this season, and mainly got away with them.

He's still green though, to be fair. All young keepers are prone to fuck-ups. Technically, Krul is excellent.

Vorm has leaked few easy goals as well. It's all bit game of relativity isn't it. He gets tons of shots and therefore many good saves. Mistakes aren't highlighted because "he plays for Swansea after all".

Same goes for Krul and Al-Habsi.

I'd say best keepers OVERALL in Premier League are STILL Hart, Cech and Given. I've never rated Reina as highly as many people do.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

hmm..maybe underrated was the wrong word.
overlooked? people tend to think of more so of Reina, Hart, Cech, and maybe even Given when they think of class EPL keepers.

You're right about Vorm, but at that price & with the saves he makes, it's still a great piece of business for Swansea.

Not sure about Cech, he leaked some very saveable goals as well.

I also rate Reina higher than Given, who may be a better shot-stopper, but loses out in every other category.

I think Reina is the best in the league by some distance, Cech was but has seemed to decline in the last couple of years, maybe through injury or age, who knows. Given was top notch for Newcastle and in parts for us, haven't watched enough Villa this season to get a good gauge. Krul is young so here's hoping he doesn't get the Craig Gordon syndrome. Vorm is quite good actually, think he has pulled out the spectacular and in our game with Swansea could have been 8-0 with a lesser keeper, someone said he was inconsistent so I'd go with that but I have only seen him play blinders, guess Swansea's defence will give you that opportunity every week though.

Hart will be the best in the league, isn't but it's coming. His double save against QPR(even though the 2nd shot was adjudged offside) really highlighted the distance he has come since he arrived.

For me Reina appears to have tapered of as of late however I think appearances could be deceiving and that it may be down more to that their central defense is getting progressively worse. For example, he used to have a big run of clean sheets and now I dont think Liverpool has had barely any clean sheets this season and last; I'm not up to date on the stats but Liverpool always seems to leak goals now, especially stupid goals.
