Mate, I'd say nuance means a subtle difference in assessment in general, while lies means the opposites of truth.
both concepts hardly apply to Ted's assessments of football in general and players' abilities and features.
He may tend to reserve the use of those rhetoricals when caught offside talking about non-played football... ;-)
