This is an interesting (unbiased?) article from Paul Handler at the MeN

Are City stealing United's X-factor? 15 Apr 2013 11:51

Are Manchester City stealing Manchester United's X-factor? Reds have got the better of City in the league but in such a cut-throat industry, simply winning is not enough.

Sunday was a telling day in the story of this season - Manchester City marched into the FA Cup final with a thrilling victory over Chelsea, United tramped down the dying embers of doubt over the Premier League title race with their win at Stoke.

What has been noticeable since is the difference in coverage and interest around both games, with City getting into the final comprehensively overshadowing United's Premier League title charge.

Granted, City's match was an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley and United's was a league game at Stoke.

But it was the manner of the performances that naturally drew different responses from fans and media alike.

United's win at windy Stoke was as perfunctory as possible. Stoke used to make an art form of being average but now it seems they've even lost that ability.

The Reds un-picked them first via Michael Carrick's toe poke following a corner and then through Robin van Persie's precision penalty.

United win thanks to two set-pieces, Stoke hoist by their own petard.

Van Persie and Sir Alex Ferguson were animated by it all but not many other people were.

As one fan wrote on this website after the match: "When was the last time you have watched Utd and come away thinking that was a brilliant game?"

Even Rooney dropping into midfield couldn't spark much life into the match.

But United won, as they have done for most of the season, and barring the biggest collapse of all time will win the league.

City, on the other hand, put on a thrilling show with Chelsea at Wembley.

Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero and James Milner were tearing all over the place while Yaya Toure put in a typically brilliant display.

The mercurial Samir Nasri is looking something close to his best and it all made for a fascinating spectacle - even without David Silva!

All this might well be of concern to United's fans and - dare I say it - the global deal-combing commercial team at the Reds.

The Old Trafford club are synonymous with not only success but also excitement. It seems ludicrous to say it, but a grinding Premier League title victory might not be enough in such a cut-throat world where clubs are forever searching out a new fans.

When you read stories like this about fan attendance at Old Trafford, the issue comes into sharper focus.

Players like Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Antonio Valencia, Anderson, Ryan Giggs, Javier Hernandez - do they really inspire edge-of-the-seat football? I believe Shinji Kagawa, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie do and am not suggesting for a minute that United have lost their X-factor.

What I am suggesting is there is a danger of that happening.

It's a tricky one for United. They invested a fair bit of money last summer in bringing Kagawa and RVP to Old Trafford, no doubt an element of those moves was motivated by the duo's box office appeal.

But there needs to be a critical mass of players who carry that spirit. It doesn't help that wingers Nani, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia have had average seasons, while Rooney continues to play in fits and starts.

It just seems when you look at the City team-sheet there is more promise, more potential for fireworks, even if with that there is a higher likelihood of the machine breaking down on occasion.

Much has been made during Roberto Mancini's tenure at City about his management of the players, what with Carlos Tevez and ex-Blue Mario Balotelli's various escapades, and how Sir Alex Ferguson would never let that happen.

But in a bizarre way, all these antics at City feed into the character of the club. It's a sporting industry yes, but it's also an entertainment industry.

Have City stolen United's X-factor? Not yet, but it would be interesting to see which team a neutral would rather watch. And with a potential Champions League audience - many of them to be swayed - not far off one billion in prospect for next season the battle for hearts and minds is a key one for clubs.

Nice article from the MEN and very true. The Rags are just a massive PR machine who go into overdrive when things aren't looking too rosey. Take our game for instance. We beat them on their turf, quite comprehensively I'll had, and Taggart comes out for his interview and basically states that they were great and unlucky to lose the game. He tells the world that Van Puss-wank was awesome and that it was a great show for the spectators, taking faint praise for an unexpected loss. That was then followed by the news that they've secured a new multi-million pound deal just to lessen the blow a little more. And what about the Falcao deal?

Moving on though, and as mentioned there, what is so impressive about their style of football; who would you rather watch?

The truth is that I'd rather see one of our great games than 38 of their 'Kick and Rush' style football. People have talked about their wingers and pace but I'd only want that in addition to what we've got already.

Looking towards the end of the season, what really have they to look forward to? Their season has now fizzled out. They've already been celebrating winning the league, that's theirs already so what do they look forward to. It's just an anti-climax when all is said and done and that's why the Rags are frothing at the mouth with our win over Chelsea. It'll rile them like fuck that we have a very good chance to usurp them, in a fashion that will be far more appealing to other football supporters. They can't handle it.

Anyway, I'm happy with what was a great week and long may they continue, starting with the Wigan game. Even that has more charm than United playing Stoke or West Ham, we all know that these games are just dead-rubber.

Watched Chelsea TV for the first time today as it had a replay of yesterday's match on - I swear that the commentators on that (one being Clive Walker) were less biased than Tyldesley and the other tit!!!

Andy 'Rag' Goldstein on TS is incredulous that it wasn't a red. I wonder what Jason 'Chav' Cundy has to say about it?

Oh, wait. Looks like a Rag and a Chav want retribution. Hang him high, it sounds.

Edit: Fuck me, they've got Dermot Gallagher on here telling us that he couldn't handle the Thatcher incident and that it ate him up inside. He even needed a sports psychologist to sort him out.

Grow some you soft-arse.

PS. Anybody seen those pictures from the Boston Marathon?

I am used to the bitter cunts now.

Hardly a sentence with out a back handed comment or factually incorrect quote.

The way i see it is, they love to hate us.Which makes it a double negative, which means they love us really. If that makes any fucking sense.I think all City fans will know what i mean.

By all accounts the Scum V Joke game was woeful.Whilst our game was epic. That will do me, we will do our talking on the pitch,if neutrals are switching over to watch us then you know we are heading in the right direction.

Looks like i will be going to Wigan to pick up a couple of Cup Final tickets when their extra 10,000 go on open sale. Will need a duffel coat, wellingtons and meat and potato pie to pull it off at the ticket office.

At the pub our OSC got there a bit early to banter with the rags. There were only 6 of them there and they were sitting in front of us. Anyways, we gave them some stick and fired them up. At full time of their game they were turning around to give us a rendition of U-N-I etc etc. when we fucked them over by putting Aguero masks on the back of our heads and giving them the Poznan.

Another brilliantly executed move by the Brisbane OSC.

Beefymcfc wrote:Not sure about where you were but ITV's coverage is just crap. The in-play commentary seems very one-sided and the first question Vince gets asked is 'Chelsea should've had a penalty, do you agree?'.

Can't wait for the Aguero foul, honest.

Edit: That interview with Mancini was criminal.

Q1. Should've been a foul for Torres.

Q2. Aguero should've been sent off.

Q3. Are you disappointed that you haven't done better.

End interview.

I think you have point they did seem the questions a rag would ask the only thing I think Bobby could do if this happens again is walk out, refuse to answer what he thinks is daft.or do a whinger and say he did not see it.No doubt the cunt was askin him loaded questions but Bobby haxs the chance to stand up for himself.

Brilliant!

I wish I could tell you how I did it but I can't. I thought for all the world that Mario was going to have a go himself but he just moved it on one more and it fell at my feet and I just thought: 'Hit the target, hit it as hard as you can and hit the target.' And it went in."
