Was it Cole who said he was leaving us to join a club on the up?

He was correct, Porstmouth had a better side than us and he went on to win the FA Cup. He wasn't to know we'd be taken over.

Some of these players never were at the club at the same time tho. Muntari & Diarra weren't even around in 2009, the former left in the summer of 2008, the latter in December the same year.
Defoe left in Jan 09. Johnson, Crouch, Distin & Kranjcar all left before Boateng arrived at Portsmouth in the summer of 09.

it is not funny what has happened to Portsmouth is it ?
Rugby League has a strict 'salary cap' the football's 3 lower leagues need to follow this, in my humble opinion.

Aye. Just shows how quickly things can change. They could even end up in a similar position as Stockport such is the extent of the downward spiral.

It takes a long time for a club to go under.

Years.

The sad fact is that the land Fratton Park is built on was (when they were bought by Al-Fahim, Chanrai and Al-Faraj) worth more than Portsmouth FC itself. The stipulations on the land's use are that it cannot be used for any purpose other than sporting activities unless Portsmouth FC own an alternative ground, or cease to exist. The latter of these was the cheaper option, so asset-stripping and intentional destruction began from day one. I fear the damage they intentionally did will take a long, long time for the club to recover from. This is also exactly why Chanrai kept the ground as 'security' until the final second of the recent takeover, hoping for the Supporters' Trust to come across a stumbling block.

some of you are making it sound like the sad loss of a long standing top flight club
Pompey were a flash in the pan who used money to buy very temporary success
Most of my (too long) life they've been nowhere

they bullied worse off teams with cash (stole Distin and Cole from us, cheeky bastards)
they broke the rules on payments (although did nothing illegal, yeah right Harry)
they gambled like Leeds but don't have Leeds' history
and maybe someone was embezzling throughout.

so the kids who only remember their hay days should look further back and recognize they are where they belong. The surprise/scandal is that they got any time in the sun at all

Permanently in the first division 1927-28 until 1958-59.
Until their relegation from the Premiership, they had spent 12 seasons outside of the top 2 flights of English football, four of which were their first four seasons after being admitted to the Football League, and seven of the other eight being from 1976-1983, which (and I'm hazarding a guess at your age here at being born c.1953-57) would have probably been pretty formative football-attending years for you.

So the grown-ups who primarily remember their low points should look further back and forward and recognize they aren't where they belong.

Agree on the overspending and bullying, though, but I blame the (past) owners, not the club or its fans.

Andy Cole was a ragtwat, who should never have played for US, in fact I supect he has wiped that from his rag memory as you should, Distain was 29ish and looked after himself, I have no probs with that as him and Dunnie deserved the MBE for the performances that last season. They kept us up pretty much single handed, bringing down the line what we have today. Pompey is a club that has been left to fold, fuck off and die, pretty piss poor from the F.A and the Premier league and the many owners have got away with fuck knows what to get money out and walked away with nothing said by others who must have known something major was amiss. Harry has washed his hands of his time there, 65 mill gone and nobody has a clue where. Crooks ran a club under the FA's nose as a cash cow, nothing said, that is a scandal ignored by the Premier League, praying they would just go away and die,Lots more to come, watch that space the shit will fly and stick to loads. Pompey fans have raised millions to keep a club like us going, we would have done the same mate.

Just over a third of their time in the Football League has been spent in the top flight, being crowned league champions twice. Historically, I'd rank them at mid-Championship, at the very worst (probably around 5th or 6th in the Championship, in my opinion).

Edit: 7th in the second tier, according to the aboutaball rankings (http://www.aboutaball.co.uk/aboutaball- ... ball-clubs), which are in no way to be taken as totally authoritative.
