I don't want to tempt fate, but lets say we progress in to the knockout stage. Bayern look like they will take 1st place in our group meaning we will play a winner in another group. Can we meet an English team in the first knockout stage or are we kept separated.

Looking at the other groups, I'd rather play one of our own PL rivals than play Barca, RM, PSG or Athletico.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

I think so. As we will have 9 points and CSKA 3 so even if we lost our last 2 games and they won theirs we would both have 9 but we'd have best head to head

thx. would be great to have 2 dead rubbers to give the kids/fringe players some minutes.

edit: unless we go for the top spot?

In the next round we can't play anyone from the same group or the same country.

English teams will avoid each other until the quarter final stage.

I thought so, but was quietly wishing for a different outcome.

Not sure who I would fancy most in the knockout stage. Tough and exciting challenge awaits us.

That gives Pantilimon a little run to show what he can do and Joe a bit of time to work on things. He was never going to set everything right in a few days. Pants for Moscow and Sunderland then look again after the international break I reckon.

Sounds like you think Pellegrini would bench a keeper without giving him a fair crack of the whip but if Costel doesn't fuck up repeatedly for a couple of months then why would he be dropped to let Joe back in again?
The team suffered 18 months of Joe's increasingly embarrassing blunders and Pellegrini gave Joe a long run this season to see if he could get his act together (but he couldn't) so why would you expect Pellegrini to put Costel on the bench without showing similar patience first - surely he deserves as much of a chance as Joe got?
If we had De Gea and the rags had Hart, we'd be top with a 9 point lead and they'd be in 12th place - that's the difference between a 'good' keeper and a 'top class' keeper - 12 places - think about it.

Come final whistle tonight despite all the doubters we could be the first British team confirmed through to the last 16 (if Plzen fail to beat Bayern). Happy Days -- take AC Milan or Galatasary next.

apparently plzen could still advance if they win their remaining 3. but assuming they don't win against bayern today and we win, we are through.

edit: as jon london just stated.

Plzien or whatever are one of the worst teams in the champions league ever, they have absolutely no chance of beating bayern.
Cska are poor enough too. We should put 3+ past these tonight.

We win this one and that is it course with home win against Pilzen .

With the groups as they are at the moment we'll more than likely getting one of:

-Real Madrid
-PSG
-Dortmund
-Atletico
-Barcelona

That's assuming the filth & Chelsea top their groups.

They're all incredibly tough games but you'd have to be happy with Atletico from what's there. I even think we'd give Real a good run for their money.

Atletico are a very good side and far from a easy draw.

I think JL will be on the bench so the same centre back pair as on Saturday. I'd play Lescott though.
I'm also expecting (and hoping(!)) for Kolarov to fill our left back position today

I reckon it's gonna be
Panties
Richars - Demi - Nasti - Kolarov
Nasri - Yaya - Ferni - Silva
Aguero - Negredo
