Gerard fankwest

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

He's around three seasons past his sell-by date and his refusal to retire internationally until recently has probably harmed the England squad considerably. It could be argued it's not his fault (sorry, couldn't resist the phrase) that managers seem to automatically pick him for England but dragging his heels when he must have known his time was up has certainly been his fault.
Even in his prime, wearing an England shirt he suffered from the same syndrome as the rest of the so called golden generation in that he played for himself and what he could get for himself from being an England player rather than playing for the team.

What qualifies as a cunt in your book?

All factual events I gather.

Jimmy Saville, Gary Glitter, Adolf Hitler, Harold Shipman now they are or were all cunts...

Stevie G doesn't really qualify for a cunt in my book..

Anyone who takes out a super-injunction should be made to wear a Fellaini wig while it's in effect. (Apart from Fellaini, who should be made to shave it all off).

Drink driving at any age - come on, don't defend it.
I never mentioned a sister - his wifes or otherwise

That's who he allegedly had an affair with. A person that doesn't exist.

If we listed all footballers indicrastions we wouldn't like any of them, there was only rumours two weeks ago about our very own captain and an alleged affair and a injunction. I would say a large percentage of what is wrote and said about footballers is bollocks.

I look at what people do on the pitch and I have seen him with my own eyes drag his team to victory in major games. I think he deserve some respect for that.

Slightly disappointing tone to the thread to be honest. He's certainly the most talented English player I've seen in my times watching live football since 1985, just a shame he decided to stick with Liverpool for so long.

He has some personal baggage, but let's remember the player for what he was, the best English player of his generation,

More talented than Matt le Tissier?

A better leader, a better all round player, a more influential player, yes, he is all of those things and more. But not in a million years the most talented.

i don't rate him as a leader to be honest. His team-mates are afraid of his aura.

I never saw Le Tissier live......but it depends what you call talent doesn't it, I'm not interested in kick ups and fancy flicks, Gerrard had everything else

Each to their own. I personally think le Tissier playing today in a number 10 role would be as good as Hazard or Silva.

I think the title to this thread suggested it was an invitation to abuse Stevie Me. Yaya was the third highest goal scorer in the prem last year, largely from defensive midfield. Yaya won the league and Cup ( scoring a fantastic equaliser at Wembley). Gerrard won nothing and made a never to be forgotten fuck up when it mattered. When the POTY was announced Gerrard was in 2nd place and Yaya was nowhere. That's not Gerrard's fault but it does clearly show there is a media wankfest around him. Personally I will never forget his triumphalist celebration against us last season. Look at Me everyone, look at me. Brenda squirming in the background. Set himself up for a massive fall there....or should I say slip.

There is clearly a reason why the likes of Jose and Fergie wanted to sign him. I read football autobiographys and a lot of the players that have played with Gerrard all say that he is the best they have played/trained with.

He was fantastic in his twenties, and could have been even better had he moved abroad after the Champions League win, but for whatever reason he bottled that. He then went on to carry Liverpool for years, which is fine, but not worthy of the adulation he has received. Flattered to deceive for England. Personally I would rate Souness, for example, as a better all-round midfielder than Gerrard. Not as good going forward but miles better defensively, and truly hard, not sham-hard. As Ferguson said, Stevie is a top player but not a top, top player.

Gerard is easily the best English midfielder of his generation and one of the best players I've seen in the flesh. People go on about Scholes and how 'world class' he was because he scored two wonder goals a season...its bollocks. Gerard carried Liverpool singlehanded on many occasions and most importantly to a champions league final win. The guy in his day had it all. He was a leader, he could ping a pass from one side of the pitch to the other, he could tackle, he scored many fantastic AND important goals. The guy was fuckin class. Not sure what he was like off the pitch because I've never met him but on it he was in a league of his own.

Not sure about best English midfielder, but a lot of what you say about him is true. Wouldn't necessarily agree about him single handedly carrying Liverpool in the champs league final. I would argue that the changing of that game was Didi Hamman in the second half. Actually the more I disect what you say the less I agree with.
He owes Liverpool nothing though. Served them well but well past it now.

I said 'best English midfielder of his generation'. Can you name a more complete midfielder in his generation than him? Basically you're looking at Scholes, Lampard, or Gerard.
