Navas worked hard as he always does. Missed a couple of chances as Sergio did. Even the journalists were questioning the selection of MDM before kick off faced with the pace of Rashford. The rags were gifted three points.

I dont get it? We only had two fit CB's, it was nailed on they would both play as soon as the Otter failed his fitness test. Plus it wasnt pace that was the issue for the goal, it was MDM jumping in when he should have stood up. We coped well wit their pace, the fullbacks and Mangala matched them and made sure they didnt get in behind.

I think he jumped in because he doesn't trust himself not to get skinned for pace.
He did the same again a couple of times most notably for the penalty they should have had.

It's even worse that he can't time a tackle to compensate.

I still don't understand why Sagna didn't partner Mangala and have Zaba start at right back.

Exactly right. Pellegrini stubbornly refused to consider other options like Sagna or even Fernando. MDM has been exposed pretty well every time he's played this season. I don't blame him but he's past it against forwards with pace. Happens to everyone. Diving in is a consequence of that.

If we'd set up with Sagna in the middle and Zabaleta at RB plus Fernando in central midfield and Yaya further forward from the beginning I don't think we'd have lost and we might well have won. The rags were poor and there for the taking. This defeat was clearly down to him. To compound that he brought on Bony instead of Kelechi who has more pace and has shown signs of developing a partnership with Sergio. Why?? If we miss out on the CL with this squad it'll be a stain on his reputation.

But why are we seeing that, yet Manuel and his coaching staff don't. It's utterly bewildering.

Don't even get me started on Yaya in the centre midfield holding role.

I would've gone with Tosin instead of Demi, Martial would rip Zaba a new one.

Tosin played 90 minutes on the Friday night in the FA youth cup semi. He would not have been considered and the Otter was expected to be ok

I don't agree re Zaba and even if you're right it would have still been the preferred option over starting Demechelis.

@Wonderwall, maybe should've been left out of that one and kept on standby for this. It was obvious Demi would get raped by the rags pace.

@Craig, it would likely have been the same result imo.

Can't help thinking that you've fallen for the media hype regarding the "new Messi" whilst downplaying Zabas abilities massively.

Haven't fallen for anything, haven't see enough in him to suggest he's all that but he does have strength and pace. Maybe I am being harsh on Zaba but I think he's lost a yard this season.
