We need a striker in the summer. That is for definite. Possibly two.
Is Kane the answer? Could be.
Are there better alternatives? Yes there are, but whether we get them is another matter.
Haaland is the obvious candidate as the long term successor to Aguero. But this will be a difficult deal to get over the line, not least because of his agent. He is scoring goals for fun in the Bundesliga but the PL is a big step up from that. Werner the last couple of years scored goals for fun in Germany but has really struggled for Chelsea so there is never a guarantee of goals. But he would be my first choice given his age and strength and ability to score goals from many positions
Kane is older and we wouldn’t get as many years out of him. There wouldn’t be a lot of resale value either. And Levy as is well documented, is not an easy man to do business with, especially as Kane is on a long term contract so unless Kane tries to force through a move it would be pricy. And he is unlikely to do that given the affinity he has for Spurs. But over 200 goals for them by 28 is a phenomenal achievement and when you consider they aren’t very successful it makes it all the better. He would likely score plenty for us given the chances we create and when all is said and done, goals are a strikers currency so I wouldn’t dismiss signing him out of hand. But the deal would need to be right given the circumstances and I just can’t see it happening for less than huge huge money.
Hopefully we are not going to be in for Messi as at 34 what is the point. But I rather think we might be, we shall see. But I reckon he will stay at Barca when push comes to shove
Who else could we sign?
Son? Lukaku? Mbappe?
Does it have to be a big name signing? Could we sign someone on the relative cheap to tide us over for a couple of years until a Haaland or a Mbappe becomes available? Someone like a Cavani perhaps. Ings? Antonio from West Ham?
Signing a marquee forward is not straightforward and we have our work cut out. Maybe we have a shortlist of three forwards and circumstance may dictate who we sign. Things like the agent, the selling club, who else is in for them, wages, where a player wants to live, language issues, are all factors.
Look at the signing of Dias in the summer. Was he our first or only choice? Who knows, but I suspect not. It would be foolhardy to put all your hopes on one player if the deal couldn’t be done.
