But it strikes me that if you have not shone by the time you are in our U18/19's then your chances with us are slim.
I think our U23's are a mixture of those in the shop window for a loan and last chance saloon and those that are very young and promising and showing what they can do against bigger stronger kids.
Some of promising 16/17 year olds seem to get a fair bit of game time.
I think these are the ones Pep is interested in.
It certainly seems that the under18s are where the current jewels are so to speak. They look immense both individually and as a team. But being realistic, these lads at that age aren't going to be in the first team. The next stage in the development is the under 23s. We don't want to see the flair, work ethic, pressing, panache and any other good attributes they have built up in their formative years at the academy watered down or even lost in this vital stage before they are ready for the first team.
The under 23s should be the team with the jewels in the crown as we will have had the lads training and playing the way we want them to for four or five years. Anyone who hasn't made the grade by 20/21 is then loaned out to either be in the shop window or gain valuable experience to possibly 'make them'. This way the transition to the first team is more seamless and we have a better chance of unearthing proper footballers who will make it with us. Surely the whole point of the academy?
