Former Premier League referee Mike Dean failed to correct a mistake in a match to save his friend and fellow official Anthony Taylor from extra "grief".

Dean was the video assistant referee (VAR) for Chelsea's 2-2 draw with Tottenham in August 2022.

Just before a late Harry Kane equaliser Chelsea felt they should have had a penalty after Cristian Romero pulled Marc Cucurella's hair.

Dean acknowledged a "really bad call" not sending Taylor to review it.

"I missed the stupid hair pull at Chelsea versus Tottenham which was pathetic from my point of view," Dean told Simon Jordan's Up Front podcast.

"It's one of them where if I had my time again, what would I do? I'd send Anthony [Taylor] to the screen. I think I knew if I did send him to the screen… he's cautioned both managers, he's had a hell of a game, it's been such a tough game end to end.

"I said to Anthony afterwards: 'I just didn't want to send you to the screen after what has gone on in the game'.

"I didn't want to send him up because he is a mate as well as a referee and I think I didn't want to send him up because I didn't want any more grief than he already had."

Hopefully Sky stand him down from his lucrative gig on soccer Saturday

This won't be an isolated incident either, not by a long way

After last season having Lee Mason leave in weird circumstances there’s definitely a lot of this that goes on

Just use your eyes to see the proof of what's going on on the pitch!

If that's post-match, then, yes, refs mix with players, managers, etc., or at least they definitely used to. If that's a charity/fundraising event, then it doesn't really mean anything either. The only way I can see it being dodgy is if it's a club-only affair, like a pre-season get together or Christmas party.

Smacks of him falling on his sword before it's revealed to me - else why would he say-so? We all know it's bent as fuck but this throws the door wide open

I wonder if he is hoping to take the top job from our Rag friend by coming clean about it ?

Apparently Lee Mason was heard saying, “just give the goal” and that’s why he mysteriously was let go..

I said at the time. That was a line in the sand moment. We should have refused to kick off. Almost a send us all of you bent twat. Go on we fucking dare you to make an even bigger twat of yourself! He would have had to go the screen!

Agree completely. I’d have pulled the team off the field and told them we won’t carry on playing if they’re going to cheat. Would have sent a clear message

Another swamp penalty hoes the way of the rags in a tight game. Seems to be a recurring theme

Was listening to TS on way to pub, all the studio agreed sir gashford dived, the contact was minimal. Couple of minutes later a rag rang in saying var did nothing in several incidents throughout the game.... 'cos he doesn't want upset his mate on the pitch' clearly trying to use that confession by Dean!

They invited him to pin point the 'incidents' he was talking about and he kept ignoring ì never did find out as my pint called me into the pub...

Should be two yellows for TAA

To be fair, two three quarter yellows!

Forest complained to the FA about the refs in the rag”s game.
Apology incoming.

Even if there's an apology, what good does it do Forest?

Agree with the sentiment but someone has to hold PIGMOL accountable? The more clubs call out PGMOL the better. That's 2 blatant decisions that the red shite have had at the swamp in two consecutive games. Neither was changed by VAR - that, quite simply, is no coincidence it's cheating pure and simple
