Kolarov on the verge of being announced.

This makes me very happy.

Its a good signing, we've got a very strong and big backline now - should be very tough nuts to crack

Oh yeah, now I get it. You pick up a "lady with a free morale" and pay her certain amount of money to enjoy her company. In return she gives you a decease you find rather hard to get rid of. That's a "nell' Vampeta transaction" right there.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Anyone seen a lot of Balotteli and Kolarov? Only seen Balotelli a few times, but that was in the midst of him having problems with the crowd and I can't recall seeing Kolarov. Opinions on these two players appreciated.

Kolarov is extremely attacking fullback. At least that's the role he has been used in Lazio. Not afraid to shoot from distance and puts in decent cross. His defending is suspect as is the case with most of the fullbacks this kind but he is marginally better than likes of Lahm. As far as defending goes, he is no stranger to wild sliding tackles so in that sense better than some of the other fullback prospects mentioned (I enjoy fullbacks like that). His positioning is suspect at least though. Improvement on Bridge though so in that sense good signing.

Balotelli epitomises "hot and cold" player. When he is on fire, even in his tender age, he is almost unstopable and has bags of tricks. However when he is having a bad game he is REALLY bad.

Personally I don't think either of them will be huge crowd favourites but if Kolarov improves his positioning he has chance to make it with us. I just don't think he is quite worth the transfer fee but it's well documented I'm fan of old fashioned fullbacks who are super solid defending and MAYBE can put in cross or two in every now and then.

Thanks Ant. When you say Kolarov is suspect positionally are you talking about him getting caught out up-field, not covering his centre backs or the dreaded playing 5 yards behind the rest of the defensive line?

he gets caught upfield a fair bit but when he's in position he's a very capable, pacey defender

Translation via babelfish from Tuttomercato 13.55

Translation of the translation I reckon:
Alexander Kolarov had a medical this morning at Paidela Clinic in Rome. Right now the transfer of the 24 year old Serb would only seem a matter of hours, and seems inevitable. Lazio would then be ready to pounce on Luca Antonelli, the Parma left-sider, eyed by other Italian teams. This transfer could be done in a matter of days.

Babelfish:
Medical visits jumped also this morning for Aleksandar Kolarov to the Paideia Clinic of Rome. To this point the passage of the 24enne terzino Serbian to the Manchester City would seem only a issue of hours, otherwise would not explain its new absence. The Lazio would be thus ready to dive itself on Luca Antonelli, l' outside left of the Parma at which other Italian squares have aimed the eyes also: l' transaction could be closed here also in little days

Sorry - re-translation of the translation of the trabnslation:

Kolarov skipped the Lazio medical tests this morning at the clinica whatever. His transfer to City would seem only a matter of hours away, otherwise why would he be missing?

Probably find out City announce it from America when he shows up at the training camp.

That's it.

I suppose it all depends on instructions Mancini will give him how well he'll do.

One things for sure, if we sign Kolarov, teams won't want to give away free kicks to us.

The lad has a rocket of a left foot, makes John Arne Riise's look average.

Imo there are hardly any decent defensive fullbacks anywhere in world football. Sometimes Cole & Evra have great defensive games but the week after someone takes them to the cleaners & yet they're two of the best. This bloke seems similar to me. (When people ask why we've signed players like Toure & want Milner; hows about, in part, to cover better when attacking fullbacks go forward?)

Kolarov has all the attributes to be good defensively though (moreso than Cole & Evra imo) & that canonball shot could be used to better advantage than it has so far & also to fire balls into the 6 yard box. Players like Bridge are average at both ends. We're signing someone here who is going to give our attack an entirely new dimension even if he's no improvement defensively.

Personally I can't wait for this deal to be done.
